also, the Klingon and Vulcan characterizations were so, so good. that Vulcan officer joining the Cerritos is going to be fun.
oh and Freeman's Ritos shirt was awesome. I'm even getting mileage out of Discovery knowledge...yea this might be the best episode of the series so far.

That one space battle was better than all of the battles in Discovery and Picard combined. The best part about Lower Decks is that I always feel like I’m getting rewarded for being a longtime Star Trek fan. The other series seem determined to punish me for it.
I have not sat down and watched this show but everytime I see a clip I'm amazed by how much I say to myself "wow that's a deep cut".
For instance, I saw an episode on Youtube with the person failing the crew on training scenarios and then they try to scare her by finding several Crystalline Entities and then warp over to a black hole and suddenly you get the motion shift effect from The Motion Picture when they are in the wormhole.

trusting your audience is the most important thing. they could easily have ruined those scenes by inserting dialogue like "oh no, that's the entity that ate everyone on Dr. Soong's home planet!!" or "this is exactly how Admiral Kirk described the warp to V'ger!!" instead, they just put it out there and if you get it, bonus points. if you don't get it (which I'm sure is the case dozens of times while I'm watching), then it's still entertaining anyways.
It was pretty clear that it was all out on the season finale (at least I think its a season finale). Smart script and dialogue. An amazing animation job with some outright beautiful shots (The panel with the ships registry floating away). The sub plot with the tour of the ship.
A outright shocking ending, and not with the arrest, but that the ship can't go to warp without its external plating.
I really love this show, its just great fun, though they flipped the bridge crew from unrepentant glory stealing aholes to actually likeable.

I didn't put two and two together until I was looking up names in the end credits. I'm once again impressed with how deep a pull they made here, bringing back a pretty much throwaway character from the second season of TNG. I'm doubly impressed they got the same actress (Lycia Naff) to voice the character; I'd forgotten the only other role I recognized her from was the three-breasted hooker in Total Recall.
As an aside, bringing this back around to Star Trek discussion, I read somewhere that Roddenberry's original character outline for Deanna Troi included her having three or four breasts. Someone talked him off that asinine ledge by explaining how the show's budget wouldn't be able to accommodate all the time required to fit an actress with the prosthetics.
