The Flames were so lucky have him as the face of the franchise. He could have easily turned out to be one of the many players who let the money and fame take a hold of their egos which turn them into dbags. Instead, we get a man who is as personable as can be, a role model for the entire city, and just a genuinely great human being.
Even if Iggy wasn't a hockey player and was just some blue collar worker like the rest of us who I happened to come across, I'd still feel the same about him. The world needs more people like him.

Huge Iginla fan. He had a few kind words for my young son after a game in Denver about 10 years ago. My son has been a dedicated hockey player since.
I have always wanted to thank him in person for that. He has so many of the qualities we want in the athletes we cheer for.

Very warm feelings about the man! What a graceful speech and presser. Glad to finally have him back in Calgary! Loved the story about his grandfather rushing out to get him a jersey for tryout and it was a Flames jersey so he was disadvantaged.

Yeah. It takes a special person to reach that pinnacle of personal success and not allow ego to become a driving force. He put it aside completely. Even as a younger man. Just so impressive.
When it all becomes about the fun of doing what it is you like to do, and taking the joy in helping others to get the same opportunities over such things as reputation, status and what you have, then you've figured out what it's all about.
Getting to uplift and inspire people with his presence on a daily basis is probably a greater gift than all material gains that were accumulated.

If they end up going that rout with their lives and end up being even half the player their dad was... they’ll be all-stars in the NHL one day.

Has he ever said why they chose Boston? I would have thought he would have chosen somewhere in Canada, but perhaps it's for the increased anonymity?

Hockey players aren't anonymous in Northeast USA and the difference between Calgary is probably negligible.

There's a number of elite youth hockey academies in Massachusetts. His sons and his daughter apparently play the game. If you're as affluent as Iginla, why not send your kids there.

I think it's more of a general question on why the Iginlas chose Boston to live in over Canada.

Man the reception those kids will get if the Flames selected them... and if they were to win a Cup with the Flames as well...
Yeesh. They don't write stories much better than that.

What an outstanding career. Iginla will always be my favourite player ever. Such a great all around hockey talent and a great person.
Most of my Saddledome memories involve Iginla in some way. I was in the Dome toilets when he scored his first ever goal and was also at the game against Tampa where he broke the Flames scoring record but the team forgot defence.
I would also like to tell a story about a good friend of mine who won a road trip with the Flames to Edmonton and got to spend time in the dressing room before and after the game. All Flames players were polite and acknowledged him however two players above and beyond to make him feel welcome answering all his questions, taking photos, and signing autographs. Who were those two players you might ask? Veteran Ronnie Stern and rookie Jarome freakin Iginla.

Apart from the gracious tweets from ex teammates (like Kopitar and Colborne) and people involved in the game, these chirps from people really show how likeable Iginla was by his teammates who knew him.

I feel kind of sad that Iggy has finally retired. It's bitter-sweet. I really wish he can continue his career and get that one Cup he was chasing. The sweet part is that he's now retired as a Flame. Now the organization can retire his number up on the rafter alongside Lanny McDonald. Until someone special comes along in the future, Iggy is and will be the greatest Flames of all time. He's now the legend!
