I always loved how cool and unphased kipper was in net. He responded the same way every whistle whether they scored or not... helmet up, takes a drink. Always feel like teammates feel better/more confident when that have a calm goaltender in net.

No need to worry, Smith is one angry mofo when he get off his zen goalie stature. I don't think I've seen him slouch his shoulders like Elliott did on some softies. I think you're more likely to see Smith smash a stick and am up his game. He's an aggro dude when he gets going.

Going to use the wait and see approach, but it does seem cost was high...I understand Hickey wasn't going to sign with the Flames, but including him should have moved the pic down a round at least. Conditional 4th, not 3rd.

Bold Prediction.
Mike Smith breaks the Honda Center curse on his first attempt.

Had an idea!

Also have to think there were not a lot of options left on the table.
Smith is probably the best one for the best price.

I'm a big fan of this trade. The 2nd rounder hurts, but if that's what it costs to re-introduce some stability to the position, it's more than worth it.

i don't think this was necessarily a great trade...the price was a bit high imo... the conditional 3rd turning into a 2nd was too much because the bar is pretty low...it should have been based on Hickey not signing with Phx...
However, people are being pretty hard on it too - everyone is going to have to wait and see at this point...
there's zero guarantee that Raanta (whom i was hoping for) will be better than Smith is... and I am pretty sure his acquisition wouldn't have been any less than Smith either... in all likelihood it probably would have been a bit more
Mason would have been free in theory... but we would have had to wait until July 1 before we could negotiate with him...if we wanted to acquire him before then, there would have been assets going the other way to secure his rights.
I am not thrilled with the trade, but now have to hope for the best and that Smith will thrive with the change in scenery...

How is that our GM got fleeced, or a bad trade? We gave up a 2nd for elliot.. so even if the 3rd moves to a 2nd it's practically the same trade.
|
Just cause Hickey won't sign doesn't mean he doesn't exist. He could've been traded for another asset so you are losing something with him.

Things are starting to come together for the Flames. Now they just need a #4 and #5 + a middle six offensive minded RW and we're set.

.917 is better than a lot of the performances the Flames have been getting in Anaheim of late.

I would guess that look externally for a backup goalie too. Could be a Johnson caliber, could be more of a 1a/b too. Not sure if they are confident handing the reigns to Smith + rookie

Smith deserves a chance before anyone writes him or the trade off. I don't see the point in getting too worked up about it, that's energy better spent discussing Jankowski in non-Jankowski threads.

Like this deal. My worst nightmare was re-signing Elliott. Smith is a good goalie and can unquestionably handle the #1 job all season long. Love that he can actually play the puck as well.

Lose a 3rd rounder to St. Louis and more soft goals against. No thanks.

I will be disappointed if Johnson is back because one of the silver lings here is Rittich or Gillies emerging as a back-up. Our over-ripening philosophy just caused us to basically lose Hickey for nothing.
|
I think it's completely fair to say we can't give Treliving the check mark on goaltending. I think it's also fair to say he hasn't taken a huge gamble on goaltending either.
It's easy to get impatient, but people need to remember that this team was missing every single piece, with the exception of #1 D man when Tre took over. It also had a completely bare cupboard minus Johnny. The goalie hole is probably the hardest to fill to boot. This team hasn't reached it prime yet and won't for a couple of years. Tre needs to properly fill that hole by then, and this deal isn;t going to be the answer to that I don't think. But people also need to give him time to build a winner and get things done, it's not that easy, and right now properly solving the goalie issue would likely but us 2 steps back on a hole that we have already filled.

For anyone tbat loves this trade Convince me how a 35 year old Elliott goalie is a better situation than a 32 year old Elliott calibre of goalie?
Mike Smith and Brian Elliott are pretty much the same level of goalie that is a fact.

Nowhere close to a fact. The stats have been posted. Smith is better. Period.
