I think that with both sides not talking, there probably just isn't much to update at this point.

Even if they are talking both sides are tight lipped. They aren't going to feed the media info. If they start doing that then this will be a longer and more drawn out negotiation.

Agents are almost never tight lipped. That's how 90% of the non Oilers news gets out. It serves the agent quite well right now to get the fans lathered into a ball of fear to put maximum pressure on Treliving

They need to just settle in the middle. Pay him 7.4 x 8 and call it a day. I really hope there isn't any resentment toward the team after this for John.

The good news is even if there is resentment, it almost always goes away shortly

Couldn't the same thing be said going the other way?
A common refrain during these negotiations is that some people are worried Gaudreau's feelings will be hurt and he won't want to play for the Flames anymore. But couldn't it be just as likely that the Flames feels get hurt and they don't want him to play for them anymore?
Of course, there's a level of absurdity in the question since hurt feelings really shouldn't factor into this situation at all.

If he agrees to an 8 year deal there is more than enough time to rebuild any damage that may have been caused

I'm completely baffled at why anyone is insinuating that the Flames are simply trying to "cheap out" on paying Gaudreau. There seems to be an underlying implication that the organization is simply trying to cut costs and save a couple million dollars. However, the organization has always been comfortable spending to the cap.
The name of the game is cap efficiency. Every team has up to $73M to spend this year. The more you can maximize that money, the better your team will do.
Treliving trying to play hardball with Gaudreau's agent is not because he doesn't like Johnny or he thinks he's bad player, he simply wants to maximize his cap. Gaudreau will more than likely score the same number of goals this year whether he's making $6.5M or $8M.

100% agree with Jerry, if there was no cap I think Johnny would have been signed by now. Management wants to have as much room to work with and who knows, maybe they have a trade in mind that would really help the team but need that extra cap space...

Or are planning to bring Russell back at 3 years for $12M, so maybe there is some silver lining to this holdout...

Which is kind of my point. other then the we won't discuss contracts during the world cup statement, there hasn't been anything. i think Trelving even mentioned that he asked and got permission to talk to Johnny during the world cup. The Francis's story early on was him getting input from other agents, not Gross. Very much business as usual up to this point.

Bennett is my 2nd favorite Flame, and I really hope he breaks out in a big way and we can justify giving him close to Monahan money. A young core of Gaudreau (7.5), Monahan (6.4), and Bennett (~6) would be tremendous value for the next 7 years. That's 19.4 locked up in 2 star centers and a perennial art ross contender.
|
Oh no...is this what we have to look forward to next season?! Countless posts about how anything under $6M for Bennett would be total disrespect and the market would pay him $7M?!

lol maybe he will be but right now he's a 40 point player. You're not going to pay the proven star player of the team because you have a 19 year old player who scored 40 points?
You've Tkachuk coming up, now that's the guy you want to pay, not Bennett

For people who have kids, do you think when Johnny finally signs you'll be happier than the day your kid was born?
It'll feel like Christmas for me and this thread can die off.

Bennett is going to be a better player than Tkachuk.

A lot more proven than Sam Bennett. Who posters are saying we should worry about signing more than Gaudreau. Which is wrong.

Cause I think we should make sure we sign Gaudreau and keep him happy with a 7-7.5 million dollar deal? and that I think it's a bad idea to tell your star player to sit and pound sand because "he has no rights" and can suck it up or take some lowball Gio Cap number?

He's absolutely a proven star.
