I don't think they have anyone that they can call up to replace him that's an NHL player. Shepyshev or whatever his name is is marginal at best and they're jamming him in on the second line.

It's because they want him in the line up while they are in the hunt for a playoff spot.
If they wait until December, or later, that won't be possible anymore.
