the only issue I have with Brandon is that it may be a step down in competition considering he has been playing against men for a couple years already. It may help him get accustomed to the smaller ice, but might not help iron out those kinks in his game.

I think Brandon would be great to let him get used to the small ice while boosting his confidence against players his own age. After a season there he still has tons of time left to develop in the AHL

With the 60th OA pick the Flames select D Oliver Kylington UPD: CHL rights to...

Thanks for clearing that up. I thought the only reason his team would ever release him would be compensation. So if at the end of camp the Flames want him to play in the AHL, what is his Swedish team's incentive to let him go?

The incentive could be the payment in transfer agreement, the Flames may have spoken to AIK before signing him and may not have signed him unless they agreed to allow him to come to North America.

The competition might no be as good but he would likely be getting better minutes. Seems like he is under utilized in Sweden. In Brandon he would be a go to guy. The competition quality is kind of irrelevant if your not playing a lot.

is the WHL really much of a step down if at all from the 2nd tier league in Sweden? It's not like he is going to be playing in the SHL

Read some Swedish newspapers.
AIK is saying that the decision will be made "in counsel" with the Flames and Oliver. He's (AIK GM) also saying that, if Calgary wants him to go over there, that they wouldn't be in a terrible situation because of the number of defencemen that they currently have under contract. Definitely sounds like Oliver is playing in NA if that's what the Flames want him to do.

He's an elite skater with very good stickhandling, passing and shooting already. He needs to learn the defensive side of the game without the puck and add muscle/strength. There are a number of options for him.

There is a video in the article of his ice time at a pre-tourney game U20 against Canada. He had just over 10 minutes of ice time. I can not see how anyone can break down his play in that game and not be underwhelmed. There were zero positive plays by him in the game. McDavid went around him a couple of times. Duclair took the puck away from him 1 on 1 in an unforced error. He had 2 scary plays around his own net. He was behind his own net as Canada scored a crease goal. He panic passed a rebound to the point that ended up in a Canadian goal. On a Swedish PP he got caught up in the offensive zone that led to a Canadian 2 on 1 short handed chance.
There was no evidence that he was a superior skater. He did not carry the puck up the ice any time ... I was kind of expecting at least one Brodie-like attempt
The Flames must think that he was never coached and that they can teach him hockey. They better have a good working relationship with his Swedish coach or get him to Brandon.. He would be way over matched playing in the AHL but at least the Flames would be able to coach him directly.
|
Scouts apparently see a lot of upside with him, but thanks for the link to that article. It's good to be able to get a bit of perspective on our prospects, both positive and negative. Sometimes as fans we can end up looking at things through rose coloured glasses a bit too much and get unrealistic expectations. I'm not saying he isn't going to become a good player, but clearly he has parts of his game that definitely need work. (As most kids his age do. )

I really don't have a problem with his comment. There's nothing wrong with a little reality check when we are maybe looking at a prospect through rose coloured glasses a bit. Kylington could turn out just fine, but he definitely has stuff he's going to have to work on to make it to the show.

No ELC yrs wasted if AIK decides to keep him. His ELC only kicks in once he's definitely playing in NA.

No, he's still under contract to AIK. He can be transferred if AIK agrees to it. If not, his ELC slides to next year.

Then the Flames can do whatever they want with him without worrying about Sweden.

No they can't. The transfer fees were set in negotiations between the NHL and the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation. You can't over pay to get around other provisions of the agreement.

That too. Years played while in Europe also don't count against his ELC, just like if he played in the CHL.

They also slide in the AHL. The only league that affects the ability for an ELC to slide until a player is 20 is the NHL.

Anyone remember watching the Ahl all star game. The Ahl all stars played farjestad and I remember hearing about a 16 year old the whole game. Turns out its olly shillington and we end up with him. Scored a nice shoot out goal in the skills comp. didn't look out of place vs the best in the Ahl. I say put him in the A
