Martin goes back to back, 5-0 Jays. This team is on a real roll right now.

Sure there were 2 walkoffs, but every team has 5-10 walkoffs a season.

This team is the #1 run scorer and is finally getting above average pitching.

If they can have their starters put up a 4 ERA they can be in the playoff hunt easily.

8 in a row. They just keep rolling.

And what a job by Copeland. Really solid start for him.

What fashion of their winning is unsustainable? The two walk-offs? Every team has their fair share of those.

This is a team that has the second best run differential in the MLB (and tops in the AL). The only reason their record is so mediocre is their results in 1-run games. If anything is unsustainable about the Jays this season it's that. It's easy to be pessimistic about the Jays (and rightfully so given their history), but they've won 6 of the 8 games of their steak by 4+ runs. That's not unsustainable - that's a team that's playing really well. Maybe it all blows up at some point, but in terms of the numbers the Jays have actually not gotten the breaks to this point.

Talks between the Jays and Phillies re: Papelbon are heating up, apparently. Don't really know what to think of that.

So, surprised nobody's discussed it, but with the Jays in the running for Papelbon, what are others' feelings about it here? To me, if they're just eating a little salary and ownership is open to upgrading elsewhere, I don't mind. If it involves giving up young assets for have a real chance of making a difference, or means the end of this years' spending, then I'm totally against it. The season isn't lost because there are a lot of games to go, but to me with such a mediocre start, I think the Jays are simply pretenders as opposed to contenders - despite the recent run. I don't think Papelbon will come cheap asset-wise, so I really wonder who's pulling the strings behind the scenes with Beaston pretty much talking like they were definitely wanting him (almost like it was a done deal). He still has a bit to go, but I just don't think it'll come cheap, and that ownership may think this is the one move that'll take them over the hump, but there are more holes mainly up the centre.

It would depend on what would go the other way and what is coming this way.

If the Jays were to send say Sanchez + Alford + miscellaneous stuff for Papelbon and Harang, that would work.

I probably wouldn't want to trade anyone significant for Papelbon alone. Taking that contract should be a large amount of the cost. Matt Boyd + Davis or Alford + something small would work.

I wouldn't want to give up much in the way of assets for him. This little run has been fun, and I hope we can keep it going as long as possible, but I don't believe we have the starting pitching to be close to a real contender.

If it was a salary dump for a B prospect then I'd be ok with taking a shot at it, but nothing more then that IMO.

You'd be ok with sending Sanchez the other way? That would be a massive mistake.

I don't like his lack of control and think he may flame out as a player.

That said he has been doing rather well this year.

They just really need another starter badly.

Harang is in the tail-end of his career. That move only makes sense if you think the Jays have a shot of winning the WS. I don't think we're at that stage.

Yeah the Jays should not trade any of their good young arms.

Sanchez is 22 and is doing a decent job as a starter this year. Trading him would be a massive mistake. He could still bust, but that would probably still be better then trading him for a closer and a 37 year old pitcher.

The only way you part with Sanchez is part of a bigger trade for an Ace with years of control. Anything else and it'd be utterly foolish.

I think with relief pitching this team could be the best in the division. I'm not sure that guy is Papelbon, though, and am fearful for what the Jays would have to give up.

I'd prefer smaller deals to pick up a couple guys like Axford, etc., than part with a massive prospect package just so the Phils eat some of Papelbon's salary.

mlb.com has the Jays as the top team that should be looking at Johnny Cueto. Supposedly the Jays have been scouting him pretty hard. If you were going to trade Sanchez, maybe Cueto is the type of guy you should be looking at. Harang...to me he's pretty mediocre, and I think he'd get crushed in the AL East.

I like Cueto and all, but is he not a FA at season's end? I understand it would take a lot to land an ace like Cueto, I'm just not sure that I would be prepared to do so with this roster. While the past 8 games has been great, there are still some holes, and I don't know if Cueto would be enough to push them to an AL East crown.

I do think if Anthopolous thinks he is enough to get you a division crown, you pull the trigger on the deal. There is the outside chance that Stroman is back in September too. After all, Anthopolous is probably battling for his job next year too.

I personally would rather bolster the rotation with a #2/3 starter and two bullpen pieces. It doesn't have to be Papelbon neither, guy get a guy like Clippard, as we don't use the closer we have in place right now.
