Our current culture has an almost unnerving ability to forget.
Add Roman Polanski to that list. The guy received a standing ovation when he won the Academy Award for The Pianist and couldn't attend because he's been living in France to avoid jail time. And it's not that these people continue to have careers, they continue to be worshiped. Hell, look at how quickly people lose their minds when Tyson's crimes get brought up. Yet the people who worship these celebrities refuse to acknowledge their roles in perpetuating rape culture.

Also, just to clarify that I don't think it should work. He's scum. But that angle is his only hope and sadly it would work with some.

However this plays out, more than likely Jian will work with some local publication of some sort. I don't think he's all that, but he'll milk some local newspaper or local radio station who won't mind having an ex-CBC guy on their roster. Question is which advertisers will back those stations/publications up?

The question of is this guy going to recover like the rest? I don't think so. A guy like Tyson was in a way a victim of a brutal upbringing. At his core he was seen as a nice guy who was in a brutal sport and raised to be an animal. All those other guys were also in an era where social media didn't take over. The difference between all these examples above and Jian, is that Jian came across as a nice guy and behind the scenes appears to be a sociopathic rat and manipulator (to put it politely). He's a different breed then the rest because people trusted him more, but not necessarily as a celebrity. He's a C-list radio host.

He appears to have an evil second life but he's disposable as a celebrity. Little chance he'll recover to the level he did.

I think Jian Gomeshi should change his name.

He looks Italian / Spanish.

Gino Gomici

He could find work in LA.

He is very well connected in the Arts Scene.

His connections in the art scene are gone, they'd be gone in the NBA after this, but in highly liberal arts scene they wouldn't **** on him if he was on fire now.

I was an 80's baby, but how did the 60's treat guys who liked "younger" women? I would venture to guess back then it wasn't as much looked down upon as today. Secondly, when his pregnant wife was brutally killed by Charles Manson and crew, I think there was a lot of sympathy towards what he had to go through.

ya, at least with him the Farrow's still talk about it (Vanity Fair story earlier this year among others) enough that it won't be forgotten, I think the Polanski story is slowly being forgotten in the public consciousness

I don't understand how people continue to work with them though, especially those that can choose their roles (i.e Emma Stone and Colin Firth earlier this year)

That's true , I think the adopted daughter part is what sickens me the most , but yeah I agree it blows my mind that not only do people work with them but are excited about it and feel fortunate to do so.

What road do you think you're going down here?

Roman Polanski drugged and raped a 13 year old girl, he got her drunk and after repeated attempts to stop him, saying no at each turn he didn't care and still continued.

From the victim
Quote:
'No, no. I don't want to go in there. No, I don't want to do this. No!', and then I didn't know what else to do," she stated, adding: "We were alone and I didn’t know what else would happen if I made a scene. So I was just scared, and after giving some resistance, I figured well, I guess I’ll get to come home after this"
Considering the charges that were brought upon him initially and the eventual chargers he plead guilty to, I think we all know how people looked at guys like him at the time. He knew what was coming, and fled.

Listen, Polanski is a great film maker, I love his movies too, watched The Ghost Writer recently, but let's not pretend he's isn't a world class dirt bag that still hasn't paid for his horrendous crime.

Hey, I'm not even familiar with Polanski's work TBQH. What he did was terrible, but I think the Charles Manson thing probably played a role into people feeling sorry for him. This also happened awhile back and people may not have realized how bad it was (recency effect). Also, have you ever had a superior who's just a complete dbag, but because they're good workers or knowledgeable, the corporation get a free pass (ie: Ghomeshi)? Explains why people still support these people. At the end of the day, yes, they're still total sleezebags.

Polanski and Allen are scumbags working in an industry of scumbags and both are immensely talented, Polanski probably gets a bit more of a pass due to his circumstances, the murder of his wife, that he was a holocaust survivor, his crime was also committed in an era when the old guy young girl thing wasn't as frowned upon.
Ghomeshi has none of this going for him, he may well be a good interviewer but that isn't to tough to replace, and his ability to interview relies on his good reputation, which is now shoot to hell.

I don't buy the excuse of his wife's murder and the holocaust as being an excuse for what is basically child rape.

I know he's immensely talented, but I refuse to watch anything that will put money towards that pig.

Same with Allen, which is a shame because I used to love his movies.
