So is Gaudreau going to sign?
I think Reinhart is going to fall to 4th...

No amount of good in the room or it doesn't matter we're not a cap team spin can justify this contract. It's bad now and will be worse once we see him play. Hope I'm wrong....

There are a lot of overpaid players in the league but I think we might have the sole honor of paying a guy 3x what he is worth

I think this signing gives a hint at how long the Flames think the rebuild will take. For the next 3 years they don't see a better use of $2.9 million dollars than Engelland.

Really good point. It also gives a glimpse into when they think they'll be renegotiating bigger contracts I think

When I saw the 2.9 I thought "ok... I guess that is ok". Then I found out it was per year and I thought I was in bizzaro world.
He's essentially a dedicated goon. Has any dedicated goon ever made that much per year?

Dedicated goons don't play 13 minutes a night on defense for a division wing team.

Burke gave Colten Orr similar money.

Dedicated goons play, on average, 5 minutes a game. Engelland averaged 13 last year. So dedicated goon, IMO, isnt a fair representation of him.

Please suggest a better rugged, right handed D UFA option

A little skewed to say, he's a defenseman, even if he's just a #6. Goon forwards likely average 5 minutes a game. The least amount of time spent on the ice by a defenseman last year was 6:03 (Karl Stollery, COL), so this comment is a bit deceptive.

2.9 million contracts for 3 years do not ruin teams. Brad Richards' contract sucked, Kovalchuk's sucked, Engelland meh...
I am glad we didn't pay more than 5 for any UFA, if Engelland can work as hard as everyone else then whatever.

Honestly, at the end of the day.... who cares what he makes. We've got tons of cap space, it's not over $3M and none of any of us are directly paying his salary anyways.
Yeah, it's not great... but its his on-ice performance that's going to count. Not his pay stub. I hope Engelland comes in here and becomes Sarich 2.0 circa 2008.

I think the past year proved these kind of players thrive under Bob Hartley system. Hartley gives a bigger role to the "enforcer" type of player, we saw it last year with Big Ern and Westgarth. I don't see next season being any different. The doallars isn't that big a deal to me. It's not like we are in cap jail. Having these guys on the team should give room for the young kids to build confidence and grow. I'm sure after the three contract is over the Flames shouldn't need that many face punchers on the team. I like to see a good fight on the ice and next season I'm sure we will see our fair share.

Treliving talked about this in the press conference. The signings right now were more about the length than the amount of money. They need bodies who are NHL capable who won't get destroyed while sheltering our up and coming players.
I don't love this move but I get the logic behind it. What UFA wants to come here?

Giving him this much money doesn't matter now. But it does set a standard for the rest of the league and team. Imagine what Gio's or Brodie's next contract will be like given Engellands

This is an overpayment but Engelland fills what was a gaping hole in the lineup (rh defencemen with size and toughness).
Its not like the Flames are worried about cap space.
If he is good in the room as has been reported and helps mentor the youth, its a bonus.
