confused by those who say that's not a penalty. costa is trying to brace himself, and puts his foot down, only to be slid out. slow motion will make players look off balance.
that's the right call.

Costa has the ball, and has a right to his space. You can't force a player to move if you don't play the ball. It's unlucky that Costa steps on him, but if he doesn't he has a golden opportunity to score.

Absolutely no penalty.

You can't say with certainty that he was going to fall. We can say with certainty that he was taken to ground with certainty after that tackle.
Always a penalty.

Costa planted, turned and was contacted by the trailing leg. There's no professional league where that isn't penalty. Defender should be embarrassed with that tackle.

If the defender has left his feet and missed the ball any contact is a foul even if the attacker initiates it cause the defender missed first.
If the defender had stayed on his feet Costa would have been called for stepping on the guy.
You always have to watch at what position the defender is in.

I'll need to see another replay, but I thought the defender missed Costas foot? (probably tried to trip him though)

I disagree that is was a penalty. He did not play the man, he played the ball. Missed the ball and the man. Costa stepped on him and flopped. Should have been nothing.
If the rule is you can't impede an attacker without playing the ball there would be a penalty on just about every push forward.

He missed the ball and left his foot out. Is Costa supposed to jump over it? It's an obstruction after going to ground. Clear as day.

Every single call is going Spain's way so far. Lucky the Dutch are only down by 1.

Costa was putting his foot down as the defender was sliding through. Costa owned the space, and last possession. Defender took his foot out as he was planting.
Absolutely laughable to think Costa intended to stomp on the defender.
To clarify i have no dog in this fight.
I'm a United/England fan. Our club mgr is LVG, our striker is RVP of the Dutch.
On the Spanish side, we have two players on the bench, Mata & de Gea.
Both teams are plagued with overdramatics, but I'll be calling a spade a spade.

He actually doesnt have to touch him. He already committed a foul by sliding under Costa and missing the ball.

Alright, if that is the rule I will concede it is a penalty. But what a stupid rule.

Not only that, but anyone who's ever played a minute of defense knows you don't go to ground and leave your leg out clumsily like that.

Stepped on him and flopped? How is he supposed to plant his foot and cut in if the Dutch defenders back leg is sprawled back? Hop over him?
I don't understand, that penalty is about as clear as a penalty can be. If it was outside of the box, would have been a free kick.

Some of these Spain guys would make amazing actors with the faces they make when they go down. I have seen guys take a direct shot of O.C. spray to the eyes and make a less emotional face.

I hate tiki taka so much. Effective for Spain but leads to boring games.
