I don't think at all that Ekblad is like jaybow. I think he could turn into something like Pronger if he develops a mean streak. I don't think he will be the next Pronger but I see that potential in him. He uses his size well and is t afraid to get his hands dirty. I really like Ekblad and would give up quite a bit to get him, but that's just me.

I'm not sure either way, but I don't think it's a slam dunk.
Forget about size, Spurgeon has really impressed me for being a green guy playing competitive hockey. He might have been the MVP for the wild in the first series (aside from Suter).

Once you get to be 30 lbs below the average sized NHL D-man you are using the same skills to get by... Neither Brodie 6-1 182 or Spurgeon is going to physically dominate and if they get into a shoulder to shoulder battle for the puck both are going to lose more often than not...... Neither is going to clear the power forward from in front of the net.
Ekblad is 6-3 208 as an 18 year old so right now he is an average sized NHL d-man.... at 6-3 or 6-4 220 in 2-3 years he has the tools to win a few battles.

Actually, a far more common attitude is the excluded middle. Think a player is a 7 or 8? Then you're crapping on him, because he's a 10. There is only 10 and 0 in fanboy world.

"He's good but not a franchise defenseman"
"So you think he's crap then???!!!!???1?!?"
"I didn't say that"
"Every GM in the league would agree he's one of, if not the best young defensemen in the universe and is worth at least five first overall picks!"
"You're going a little overboard here...."
"Brodie is the best and you hate him and you must hate the flames and you're not happy unless the flames are bad"
That's how I feel some conversations go on here. Brodie is good but not great and hasn't shown anything to indicate he's anything more than a 3-4 defensman at this point. He could turn out to be better but he hasn't done much to prove it.

He had a great year last year and I hope he continues to trend upwards. He and Gio played very, very well together. If Tallon would accept Brodie for 1st overall, straight across, I would do it. Otherwise, I say keep him.

Absolutely. But it is now coming on 8 years after he was drafted. It can take that long. It might take Ekblad that long. So if Brodie is playing 24 minutes a night versus the toughest competition in the league, and doing it very well, I'm not sure Flames are in a position to move that guy away for a guy it might take 8 years to get to the same place, regardless how high his ceiling may be after that

Ekblad could also come in and be a Norris nominated rookie. Saying it could take him 8 years to be good is just as ridiculous. On size and strength alone, Ekblad has the upper hand and he's young and still growing. Brodie is good but he's more of an offensive guy where Ekblad looks better all around

I for one would be willing to take the risk that Ekblad doesn't turn out because I think the chance of him being the true #1 Dman this team needs is just to great. I also see Florida only being interested in Brodie to get something done and think given his proven ability at his age is worth more than a straight up one for one deal, so this is kinda what I would love to see go down;
To Flames:
-2014 #1 Pick (Flo)
-2014 #32 Pick (Flo)
To Panthers:
-TJ Brodie
-2014 #64 Pick (Cgy)
To Flames:
-2014 #5 Pick (NYI)
To Isles:
-Sven Baertchi
-Rights to Cammalleri
Once we have the #1, 4 and 5, go to the Oilers and convince them what they already believe - that they'll be a cup contender next year FOR SURE, so we move up in this years draft (better ensuring our top two picks in the draft) while getting another top 5 lottery pick in next years super draft.
To Flames:
-2014 #3 Pick (Edm)
-2015 1st Round Pick (Edm)
To Oilers:
-2014 #4 Pick (Cgy)
-2014 #5 Pick (NYI)
In 2014 we'd be drafting #1, #3, #32, #34, and #52 in the first two rounds and likely have a legit shot at two top 5 picks in 2015.
May be way off but all seem somewhat feasible to me.

When was the last time a rookie was nominated for the Norris?

Panthers don't trade #1 unless they get another top-10 pick back.

I think they would but we would have to give up a lot more. Something like Brodie and Sven for their first and second and that is just too much.

Disagree.
Most posters are rational and temper valuations reasonably.
Unfortunately, there will always be the extreme views, that's just the way it is. The choice we have is to focus on the extreme, or focus on the rational.
Edit: never mind, we are essentially saying the same thing.

Brodie is great but he is not worth a top overall pick on his own not yet at least

Brodie is a valuable asset. He'll slot into the 2 or 4 spot in the d-man depth chart for the Flames for a long time. It's not worth moving him for what he would probably get you.
But Burke got a 2nd for Berra. So anything is possible.
