Loved the movie.
The lesbian reference , giving back story to Cain's hatred of the Six copy, was interesting.
Most intriguing moment for fans of the series - and a set-up for season 4 - was the Cylon hybrid warning that Kara Thrace would appear at a later date with a promise to lead humanity to salvation, but would instead be the architect of humanity's destruction if they followed her . . . . . and of course, that moment is where season three ended.
"They must not follow her."
A very favourable review of the movie was in the Herald television section today. The reviewer was correct to note that one didn't have to know much, if anything about the series, to step into the movie, which, given the complexity of the series, was pretty remarkable.

I wasn't let down, but I wasn't blown away by it.
I loved seeing the old Cylon batwing, to me they just look like a more lethal fighter then the new one. I also loved seeing the old Centurions, except that they seemed way to agile and quick. I was hoping that we would see the old two dinner plate base star too.
Was the old man truly the Cylon hybrid? I don't think so, I have my thoughts on that one, but I'll keep it to myself for now. I think the key phrase through the last year is going to be "It happened before, it will happen again"
Shaw to me was more annoying then anything else, Cain talks about the razor and being able to rise above your hestiations and emotions to complete your mission so that you can at least go back to being human. But you never got a sense that Shaw was anything more then self pitied, and a huge suck up. I was also hoping for more conflict from Cain, or something that would make sense to her actions, and they had real opportunities to really drill into that, but they really didn't.
They never did show how she got Cain's knife, which is too bad because they took great pains in the handoff to Starbuck.
Was the warning about Starbuck an actual prophesy, or was it more Cylon games?
Six was hot with the whole red hair thing, but again they really brushed past the torture aspect that would have made Cain seem even less human. Especially if she watched it. Again they showed Six sitting on the floor looking up, then the next time we see her she's got a bit of blood but is nowhere near the catatonic state that we saw her in the series.
Really missed seeing any trace of Baltar which is a shame because he could have been a central character to the whole conflicted humanity story.
Again it was ok, not great, didn't really create a ton of anticipation for the last season.
The term I'd call it is Galactica Interruptus.

My question: Why the hell were her crew so loyal to her? When we encountered Cain in season 2, yeah we knew there were skeletons in the closet, but I also got the impression they had been extremely successful at knocking off a bunch of cylon bases through guerilla strikes and the like. Why didn't we see any of that? By the time the civilian massacre happened, I couldn't figure out why her own officers weren't considering assassinating her.
|
Yeah, that pretty much sums up my biggest complaint with Razor -- it didn't show us anything new about Cain and the Pegasus crew, instead it just showed us a bunch of stuff we already knew because it was told to us previously. I think it was a real wasted opportunity.

I loved it.
I can't wait for my DVD copy to arrive so I can watch the extended scenes. I kept going back to watch the battles in slow motion. So much going on I found it to be chaos when I watched at normal speed.
Enjoyed the concept of whatsherface Asian hottie with Australian accent being Caine's "legacy". Almost a person on the same path as Cain, who would eventually become just like her.
Could have done without the gold cylon though. It brought too much cheese back from the old show.

This is the best show on television right now. Period.
I was having lunch with some colleagues earlier this week, a number of whom had just returned from a conference in San Diego. One of my friends mentioned that he had picked up a book about teaching the Bible through popular media like film, music, art, and television. He mentioned that the book was pretty disappointing in it's selections of films (such as The Omen and The Exorcist?!), and the the chapter on TV was restricted to The Simpsons and The Family Guy.
Ever since the middle of the first season, I have thought much about how this show could be used in my classes; especially my Bible Intro classes. The story of a radically monotheistic race of beings, who desperately seeks to irradicate its polytheistic "masters". The dichotomy between the Cylons highly experiential religion, and their fervent messianism against the Colonies somewhat nominal adherence to the "Scriptures" is also very interesting. So is alot of the apocalyptic imagery and allusion:
My new favourite, that Kara Thrace is the "harbinger of the apocalypse".
I'm only sad that it will all come to an end this year.

The original 1970s BSG was written by a Mormon who incorporated much of his religion's mythology into the story.

I enjoyed it greatly but I don't know if that was on merit or just because I miss the show so much and its been so long. The reality is that it was probably on par with an average episode - which of course means it was also better than 95% of what is on TV.
I thought the main character was mis-cast. She just as too small, too pretty for the role. I didn't buy it.
But that is a minor quibble.
I found the subplot (though minor) with six to be the most interesting.

I thought it gave the rest of the series more cred, to see Admiral Kane more from her piont of view, to see how she came to be the jaded, monster she turned into and wasn't always that way. Made her character less of a caricature. Loved the convo at the end where we see Adama and Apollo discussing her decisions and saying who can really judge her.

It wasn't in the program guide prior to me leaving on holiday and I didn't get back until yesterday.

You can buy it for $20 on Amazon. It's a good movie if you like BSG.
Or you could wait. I am guessing it will be in reruns fairly regularly.

Apparently, for those interested, Razor will be rebroadcasted on Space on Saturday, 29 December.

Does anyone have any idea when we can expect to see new episodes? I just assumed that season 4 would begin immediately after the movie (I hate waiting!).

Nothing new until March (at least on Sci-fi network in the US - I would assume Space should be close behind).

According to Moore's blog, they have filmed everything that was written.

The Dirty Daggitt reveals to SFCrowsnest.com timeline - the century - in which the Galatica finds earth . . . . and a few other things.
Obviously this is a spoiler link. I don't think it will spoil your breakfast but if you want nothing at all revealed to your eyes then avoid this one.

Sci Fi Channel will be airing two specials back to back March 28. Battlestar Galactica: Revisted will be a synopsis of the first three seasons and Battlestar Galactica: The Phenomenon looks at the response of fans and critics to the series. Season is set to begin April 4 on Sci Fi. It will likely air that week on Space.
Season 3 DVDs out on March 25 if anyone wants to do some serious cramming before season 4.

Also rumbling that NBC:Universal has asked to take a look at the pilot script of Caprica. They might need to film something due to the writers strike.
