Superstore: Sunday mornings, show up at 9:30. All the tills are open at 10, and I never hit a line then. Old people are in church, it's my favourite time to shop.

Evenings aren't too bad at Superstore either. Definitely more tolerable than the weekend daytime.

Costco nog is the best nog. Speaking of which, I need to watch out for some spiced rum sales.

Sobeys parent company launches 'aggressive' $500M cost-cutting plan
Plan includes cutting office staff; cuts won't affect front-line store workers
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/nova-s...beys-1.4100826
Empire Co. Ltd. has launched a $500-million cost-cutting plan to turn around its Sobeys grocery business, which has been struggling to recover from missteps taken with the acquisition of Safeway Canada four years ago.

I tried to do the order online thing and found it to be even more of a pain.
Online system is a pain to use so it takes longer than it should. Then you get to the store and wait in the parking lot for someone to pick up your stuff. Then they can't find half the stuff on your order (for ex one time they couldn't find chicken or even a substitute for it...seriously?) so you have to go into the store anyways.

Too little too late. Safeway's now have Zellers syndrome, where they are half staffed with empty shelves and workers that DGAF. And Sobeys are just plain unremarkable.
Save-On has my business now, and since they did this "100 item price match" thing they do on the core products, they are right in line with WalMart.

Half staffed grocery stores seems to be an epidemic. I stopped at the Hamptons CO-OP after work last week (about 5:00 pm) and they had one till open. One till open! It's bad enough we pay amongst the highest prices for groceries in the country but I find the lack of staff appalling.

Which Safeways have empty shelves?
Never had an issue with the one on 130th since I started using it.

I just was in the Edgement Superstore - it was doing it's best 1980's Moscow impersonation in some aisles - I'd say the asian ramen noodle shelves were about 90% empty.

That's weird. I almost always shop at the Hamptons Co-op, and even though they don't have a huge number of tills open, it's usually pretty fast to get through. I don't think I have ever waited more than a couple of minutes to get through a checkout there.

Bump to add today's announcement that Sobeys will convert approx. 25% of it's current 255 Safeway/Sobeys stores in Western Canada into it's Freshco discount stores over the next five years.

other than the fact I find some of the highest prices at sobey's.
I usually end up at Costco, Save-on, no frills and superstore.
I manage to normally avoid safeway and sobey's completely.

You go to four grocery stores in a week or alternate between them? I can see doing Costco and a regular grocery store but to go between four stores in a week would seem a bit excessive...

Save-On is a bit farther out from my usual Co-op, but you have enough different variety that it’s worth it to go sometimes. It’s a nicer shopping experience too, compared to other grocery stores.

Y'all know you can order groceries online from Save-On and they deliver right to your door, eh? If you're scatterbrained and lazy like me: life changer.

I grew up with Overwaitea/Save-On in BC, so it was nice to see them here. Like any grocery store, I watch the prices. They can be a bit high for certain things, but the quality is good. Safeway has given up.
Save-On is building another store at Sarcee & Richmond Rd SW in the former Richmond Square "mall" beside Canadian Tire.

Costco I get to about once a month. save-on every second week or so.
but yes, in one week I may go to all the stores.
the all have their advantages price wise and selection wise.
all the stores are very close to my home, so it's not like I'm driving across town.
my family is on a tight budget and I think I do fairly well saving money and also making sure my family is well fed.
sometimes I could save a trip if I spent more time price matching instead of going to multiple stores, but I find that can be a pain in the butt. the clerks are not always good at quickly dealing with price matching, and I do get impatient.
I'm not yet comfortable with online grocery shopping. I still like to be in the store to check the quality of the meat, fruits and vegetables.

I remember the Overwaitee in Kelowna growing up - for a period of time they had this wall of fill-it-yourself 2L fountain pop, with a crazy variety of flavours too. I think they were trying to put Pop Shoppe out of business or something. It's kind of funny, back then Pop Shoppe was for us poor peasants who couldn't afford brand name root beer or colas.
