IIRC, Gaudreau was ranked amongst the top 3 in terms of pure skill. Obviously he went in the 4th round because there were huge question marks as to how he would be able to translate due to his size, but I do remember they were talking about him having elite skill level at RNH level. It shouldn't surprise anyone if Gaudreau catches up to the rest of the elite of that draft class.
And I think this is why his goal totals will go up. Unlike other playmakers I think he will start to sniff out defenders cheating to the pass when he has the puck and start shooting it himself.
I think you're right and he's making a mental 'book' on the opposition for future reference, then watch out.
It's so awesome to have a guy like this on the team... Someone who can seemingly create scoring chances at will. I think it's a big part of why no lead is safe against this team. He activists his "Sherlock Holmes Vision" and the whole game slows down around him... Then he calculates in his head exactly how the play is going to develop.
As he continues to get better and guys like Bennett and poirier join him... This will one day become a regular occurrence on the bench:
Hartley: "Johnny!"
Gaudreau: "Yeah coach?"
Hartley: "I need a goal!"
Gaudreau: "Sure thing coach."
Johnny to Bennett... Back to gaudreau... To poirier... Poirier scores!
Along with the tremendous skating and stick handling Johnny has, his vision for the game is remarkable.
The thing that has my house so excited for watching Johnny on a shift is his contagious personality his pure fun for the game.
It is rubbing off on all his team mates and the fans.
At work we spent the last hour talking about Johnny Hockey.
I sure hope that when Raymond, Stajan, and Colborne comeback that the Hudler, Gaudreau pairing at least remains intact with Jooris/Granlund.

Wow. That's a great interview. Conroy was very informative with the behind the scenes details regarding Johnny's signing.
So if it was up to his parents, he would've gone back to school. And Daddy Gaudreau's concerns with Burke liking size was very real.
Very interesting that Craig didn't dance around the family advisor/agent title. He flat out referred to Johnny having an agent rather than a family advisor.

Top three is a bit of a stretch. Most of what I can find from around the time of the draft describes him as having "1st-round talent" but seems to be more specifically talking about mid-to-late-1st-round.
He got compared to Rocco Grimaldi a lot specifically that he is "not as talented as Grimaldi."

Even though Grimaldi is quite talented in his own right, that's crazy to think of that evaluation looking at him now.

If Johnny keeps it up he's currently on pace (21 pts in 27 games) to score 60+ pts this year.
He's 4 pts behind the leader (Filip Forsberg) in the rookie scoring race.
Last year McKinnon won the Calder trophy with 63 pts.
I'd say he's got a pretty good shot at winning the Calder.

Reason: Said Calder Cup... meant Calder Trophy... I'm everyone knew what I meant.

Gaudreau visibly struggled in his first five games of this season, going pointless, and frequently looking overwhelmed. But since he returned from his one night in the press box for Flames game #6, he has scored 21 points in 22 games, and has been dominant at many points in the first third of the season. The sample size is large enough to expect that he is already a point/game player. I say this not just because that has been his current rate of production, but because with all the chances that he creates in a game that do not result in goals, his point total seems like it realistically could be a hell of a lot bigger.
If he continues to play at a point/game pace—and I see no reason to expect that he won't through the balance of this season—he will finish with close to 20 goals, and +70 points. And this will be a tremendous accomplishment.

I don't think he's getting sent to the AHL to win the Calder Cup

The Calder Cup is awarded to the top AHL team who wins the playoffs. You're talking about the Calder trophy.
McKinnon win it as an 18 year old for most of the year. Johnny is 21. Having said that, I think he has a his a chance if Forsberg slows down which he should. Johnny has 21 points in his last 22 games, so the pace is there for sure
He thinks the game at such a high level, Im not sure that I'm worthy of giving some contstructive criticism.
But....
He definitely needs to shoot more. He has such an uncanny ability to dart into scoring areas, but he often passes. There were a couple times last night where he forced a low percentage pass that resulted in a turnover when he was in prime scoring position.
