Barzal is a good player, but he’s way overrated on this board. Islander fans figure he has a habit of disappearing

That was in his draft profile as well. Still, I'd like him on the Flames. Always have even way back to the draft. He was my #1 wish on the draft list.

The numbers don't really reflect this, as he has good playoff production. Unless, he has been bad in a lot of individual games or is bad in elimination games specifically?

I’m just saying what I see on Isle fan boards like this one. Rightly or wrongly they figure his numbers were often built up in “easy” games. He was benched by Trotz from time to time.

This is 4 years old so maybe he’s outgrown it:

Based on those videos and analysis, Barzal would be benched or pushed down the lineup until he learns and proves to Sutter he can be trusted

He has been living off that explosive rookie season but hasn’t hit 20 goals or 65pts since. His speed is amazing and he is a right shot center so I can see the appeal a change of scenery may unlock that elite potential he showed as a rookie

Reminds me a bit of Gaudreau in his lame years, defensively.

Always cheating a bit, not taking the guy a stick length away. Kind of forgets he's playing hockey and needs to go get the puck.

The Isles are in win now mode. How does moving Barzal out make them better? Their top 4 D is really solid, and they didn’t trade the 13th OA pick to play Romanov on the third pairing.

Their D is solid, but they have a lot of guys to grill the steaks, and not enough guys folding the pastries, beyond Dobson. Pulock is kind of a 30 pt guy, and Pelech and Mayfield are shutdown guys. I think they could use another puck moving, offensive guy. I don't think Romanov will be the answer either.

The only reason he’s on the table is he’s going to be a huge cap problem for them. Especially if they have Kadri locked in. Only they would know how preliminary contracts have gone. I imagine if Barzal is moved at all then they knew they either couldn’t convince him to sign without checking out UFA, or they simply couldn’t afford what he’s due.

If Barzal will cost 10M in a year its just not worth it.

Attractive player but he will leave you wanting at a Huberdeau price tag I think. Especially if he's producing under a PPG clip. The gamble would be betting on him thriving offensively getting out of a trap system team. Theoretically you think yes, but it's not a guarantee.

Yeah, if his ask will be $10M then the Flames should say "no thank you". Brazal hasn't proved he is any where near a $10M player.

We need to ban point/goal totals from discussions for the next 10 years.

GP - G (82 pace) P (82 pace)
82 - 22 ( 22.0 ) 85 ( 85.0 )
82 - 18 ( 18.0 ) 62 ( 62.0 )
68 - 19 ( 22.9 ) 60 ( 72.4 )
55 - 17 ( 25.3 ) 45 ( 67.1 )
73 - 15 ( 16.8 ) 59 ( 66.3 )

Avg is about 21g 70pt pace. 22g 67p if you exclude rookie year and last year.

IMO he's like Brayden Schenn with a higher ceiling.

FWIW, Schenn was traded at age 26 (3x5.125M) for Lehtera + 27OA + 1st (Top-10 protected). Schenn had lesser stats at the time of trade - coming off 2 career high seasons of essentially 25.5 goals / 57 pts.

I agree his rookie season probably drives his trade cost higher than his worth, as well as his next AAV. No idea what I'd want to pay him long-term.

Given the Flames window, I think we might be better off paying similar money to a guy like JT Miller. Better player, but theoretically his AAV should be similar/lower since it's buying his twilight years (compared to all prime for Barzal). Given the Isles window, I don't think it's crazy for them to sell high on Barzal and pin their hopes on a [probably] cheaper AAV guy like Kadri.

Don’t think Barzal is on the block, nor do I think he’d fit well in a Sutter-like environment. He didn’t do so hot with Trotz. Although, if Sutter could get him to buy in you could get a very good top 6 player that skates like the wind.

I wonder if Montreal would be into something like Monahan + 2nd for Drouin?

…ever since I saw Huberdeau being buddy buddy with Drouin at that event the other week I started watching Drouin’s highlights. Could be a good add. He’s got finishing ability that’s for sure.

Respectfully, I don't think Drouin could even handle playing under Sutter.

PS: I don't think Sutter would suffer coaching Drouin either....

Drouin is a LW and Monahan is a C, can he play RW?

Pass ...he's missed a ton of games the last 3 years. He has some good flashes at times, and obviously has some skill but extremely inconsistent amongst other issues
