The Calder front runner, Kaprizov, wears #97.
You just KNOW this annoys hacks like Staples, Stauffer and the fan base.

At the time McHobo signed his deal, I could see why it made some sense to him. The Oilers were coming off of their first playoff appearance in more than a decade, and they actually won a round. The buzz all summer was that this was a team on the rise, and finally about to realise some of those outrageously unrealistic expectations that had been foisted on the franchise over the past several years. He had such a good season that there was also no reason why he would have to leave any money on the table—most of the high-end RFAs since he signed his contract have leveraged shorter terms in an effort to maximise earnings down the road. For McCOVID, his contract was going to be the highest in NHL history, regardless of the term.
Let's face it: the vast majority of hockey players are not all that good at assessing talent, or team construction. If they were, then many more UFAs would pick a winner every single time. I believe that McDirtyElbows was honestly convinced that the Oilers would be a perennial championship team in the short order.

Just seems dumb. With his talent and leverage, he could choose anything.
Make tons of money playing hockey in northern Alberta, or make tons of money playing hockey in Socal or Florida?

But since he was already being marketed as the new face of the NHL, I am sure that he likely had to weigh the consequences of what it might mean to appear disloyal to his team. I agree, it was a bad decision, and I don't think he is smart enough to have recognised that at the time he made it.

I don't think that it annoys them as much as you think.
Both wear 97 due to the year of their birth.
I'd bet it is brought up at the awards ceremony.

Wasn't posted a while ago, that one person in the media (Staples probably), suggested that the number should be made exclusive to McDavid?

Dunno, but the fact that the guy winning the Calder is the same age as the guy winning his third Art Ross, probably third Ted Lindsay, and second Hart trophy?
I'd bet that they write an entire article on it.

No, Old senile Jim Matheson suggested Puljus 98 was too close to 99. No one agreed with him

Puljuarvi wore 98, his birth year, and Edmonton Media got bent out of shape that it was "too close" to 99.
Yes, they will get bent out of shape Kaprizov has the audacity to wear the hallowed #97

Yes, but no. We do a lot of generalizing in this thread.

I am confident that Jim Matheson and David Staples speak for a not-insignificant segment of the Edmonton fanbase.

Is there any oiler media personality that doesn't come across as senile to you?
Terrible or very incorrect takes from across the board over the years. They all took their turns. From micro/macro, to the sacred 98, to doubling down on communal pee & rinse stations.
You can't say your lot hasn't done its job in carving out its reputation (as a circus).
I'd be embarrassed to touch those colors after the last decade of truly incredible lowlights.
But at the end of the day you'll go and proudly don the jersey of your fourth lottery handout like you earned him or something.

I can't wait until McD gets to UFA, and pulls a Tavares and goes to Toronto.

I bet you Matthews and McDavid together couldn't even elevate Toronto to a championship.
They're extremely skilled, but at the end of the day they're not winners.
Sid's always gonna have that over them.

Hot take: 99 was disrespectful to Howe, like Gretzky figured he was two times the player.
