I also think that one if not both of the Oilers goalies will be testing UFA this summer, and there would be an opportunity there to pick up a decent starter on a manageable deal.

They would have to be "filtered" through a couple of other organizations in order to get the Oiler stink off of them first, ala Dubnyk.

So many goalies that 'might' be available via trade now or free agency next summer, and everyone of them has at least one chink in the ole armor. No matter who you trade for or sign, they could easily flop hard in CGY upon arrival.
Goalies are so risky.

Every goalie that could possibly be available is either too old or too untested.

Phil Kessel may be available. Fit with the Flames?

6,800,000 AVV until 2022 is a bit rich for the Flames I think. Money would have to be held onto and going back the other way.

One is an effective goal-scoring forward. The other is dead weight....

I don’t see how the Flames can afford to take on more contract going into next year. I think it will be a quite deadline this year for us.

Hopefully it is. I don't want any rentals. Waste of assets IMO

I agree completely. There will be sellers, but we just can’t afford to be buyers unfortunately

Team just scored 9 goals and is 2nd in league scoring and we will be in a cap crunch next season. Why would we go after a scoring winger on the down slope of his career and take on a huge Salary.

IMO if we are spending assets there is 1 possible target. And thats a goaltender and one of ours would be going back the other way. And this would only happen much closer to the deadline and only if there's really questionable play in net.

Haha, I wish, Neal cannot be traded at this point. He's been absolutely useless. A 31 year old slow winger with 6 points and 5 years left on a 5.75M contract? Good luck moving that.
Only option at this point would be to trade Frolik (Bennett has replaced his spot) + picks/prospects for a play making center/winger for him to play with and hope he gets going. Throwing him on a line with Ryan and Czarnik/whatever isn't working and it isn't going to work.

I wonder if you could snag Raanta for Smith + pick/ect.
Does Raanta want to become a backup again? Seems like Hill has stolen the starters net and that could cause some turmoil in the locker room.

There's no way that they'd trade us Smith for Raanta. Not to mention the only reason Hill has taken the starters job is because both Raanta and Kuemper are injured. He's starter by default and not because he took the job
