Pavlyuchenkova is hitting some amazing groundstrokes so far. Leylah hanging with her and making her run... very even.

Brutal. Made some good, gutsy shots to stave off the break for a while, but just completely lost her ability to hit a first serve in that one. Which to be fair has been her biggest weakness so far.

This is a lot like the Sabalenka match except Pavlyuchenkova is showing absolutely no signs of cracking mentally or even really sagging at all.
This is the thing: Leylah's game is quite beatable if you have the power, but you have to hit your shots. That's what she's doing.
Anyway I don't think you can lose 3 service games against someone playing this well and still win the set but we'll see I guess.

Clearly something wrong with Leylah's right foot.

A pair of extremely impressive serves to get out of trouble there.

I continue to marvel at her poise and mental fortitude. Most players would have folded in that spot, down a set & a break to a top 10 player.

Going down 2-0 in the second, having been broken 4 straight times, then winning 6 out of the next 7 games.

First set was looking so ugly I tuned out and did other things. In bed ready to sleep and I see it's in the third. The kid never quits.

It's been particularly impressive because it's not like she's had the chance to take advantage of any lengthy drop in quality from her opponent. The Russian has looked a bit frustrated the last couple of games but it hasn't translated into any rough stretches for her yet, so effectively Leylah is just hanging in with a player who is totally outhitting her for over 2 hours. Very gutsy.
She has made a few more errors into the net in this set though, hope that cleans up.

So, Leylah needs to work on her 2nd serve and Anastasia needs to work on her overhead smash.

If she doesn't break here though it could be a real problem.
EDIT: There it is. That could be an issue. Absolutely needs a solid service game here. That game was it - first 0-30 and then a couple of other big opportunities that she just gave back. Very uncharacteristic and gives the opponent life when she was about to give up and go home.
