Lets say hypothetically Mcdavid tells them he wont extend, and will only go to Toronto. What does that deal even look like? assuming he has 1 year left on his contract

If that's the case, the Leafs will just sit and wait to get Mavi for free in July and the Oilers will get nothing.
The Oilers can't trade Mavi away because he has a NMC.

thats a great question
5 picks? (whatever Toronto has in the first 3 rounds in the subsequent 2 years)
prospects and something to ease the cap hit?
A couple cases of Steam Whistle?

It will likely be similar to the Tavares situation. Leafs didn't have to trade anything because they knew it was a done deal that he would be signing with them.

Honestly, I think the Oilers still try to go all in and walk him to free agency. Their future is already mortgaged so much that a long rebuild will be necessary after the McDavid era. Whatever GM they have now likely won't be around long after McDavid leaves regardless of whether they trade him or let him walk.

I’m wondering how long it will take for pissy to be outed as a mercenary when he doesn’t take a “play with the oilerz” discount?

I wonder if Jim Matheson berates him publicly.
"Leon, why are you so greedy!?"

I do wonder if the McLeod trade really helped with Broberg and Holloway's decision too.
McLeod took the team friendly 2 x $2.1M coming off what was a bit of a breakout season for him.
Then less than 12 months later he found himself traded to Buffalo.

Of the 13 Cups won by these players, only 4 were won by the players when they were older than McDavid and Draisaitl will be next season. 3 of those were won by Yzerman after he completely re-invented his game to be less focused on scoring. Too bad the Oilers hired Stan Bowman and not Scotty.

To add to this Yzerman and Sakic were playing on pre-cap powerhouses. They were the true veteran leaders on teams that you couldn't put together right now with the salary cap.

I get that. I got to see Lemieux's last game in Calgary (oddly enough 3 seasons before he retired, he was injured a lot and the Pens only came to Calgary once every 2 years back then)
He scored 4 points, it was such a treat to see.

I got to see Guy Lafleur's last game in Calgary, at the end of his comeback with the Nordiques. He was pretty much washed and I don't remember him doing much of note, but it was still very cool to see. The wheels were still there, amazingly enough.
Though it was slightly disturbing seeing the long blond flow on the back half of his head, and the front half completely bald.

No chance Pissy signs with Edmonton. He's going to get his retirement deal somewhere warm.
