The weird thing to me is that you are allowed to have five players on your team and the US only took four to Malaga. Also, could you imagine the backlash if Daniel Nestor was still playing and available and Canada didn't select him for Davis Cup action?

I don't know the rules for Davis Cup, so please pardon my ignorance. If we bring Daniel Nestor, does he has to play?

No worries and good question - There are no set rules for Davis Cup player participation, you can bring up to 5 players for the competition and the captain of each team decides what player or players (if it's doubles) will take the court.

The general agreement between the teams is that their number 1 player takes on the opposing country's number 1 player and likewise the #2 player takes on the opposing #2, but that's not set in stone and can be changed. Today Canada used three of their five players and Germany used four of their five players, but as mentioned, there is no requirement for everyone on the team to play. There are two guys on Canada (Gabriel Diallo and Alexis Galarneau) that will probably see no action, but they are along to gain experience as well as serve as hitting/practice partners for Felix, Denis, and Vasek.

Australia eliminates Croatia and just like yesterday between Canada and Germany, it came down to doubles and the heavily favored Croatian doubles team lost to Australia in three sets. Canada takes on Italy on Saturday morning at 5 am Mountain time.
