I think it reads exactly how it looks. He will indeed retire at the end of the year. It is odd how they contextualized that though.

Since he's 35, does his contract stay on the books?

Only if you signed the contract on or after the age of 35 does the cap hit count after retirement.

No. It has to be signed after the player turned 35 to be considered a 35+ contract (... I mean, it has to start after the player has turned 35 -- don't want to make the same mistake the Flyers did with the Pronger contract).

You have to think Treliving is looking to move at least one or maybe two of the above Dmen. Especially if rumors are true and they are trying to re-sign Russell.

Stars are loaded on D in the AHL

All the Dmen I mentioned have just one year left, and although the Stars may be loaded on D in the AHL, they are thin on veteran NHL defenseman. Or at least ones under contract anyways.

Toronto got a first for packaging Franson and Santorelli last year. I wonder if we could get that for a Russell + Hudler combo

I think it would be foolish for a team that is high in the standings to not trade 1 first for both Hudler and Russell. If Franson and Vermette could do it (individually), then Hudler + Russell should as well.

If Lecavalier has a bit of resurgence in the 2nd half of this season with the Kings, why would he retire?
His promise to retire really can't be binding?
Of course the Kings would somehow find a way to get around it though.

I hope Russell and Jones can get us a first rounder. And Hudler get us one too.
But that may be wishful thinking for Jiri

If he scores at a 50 point pace through the end of the season and through the playoffs I'm sure the Kings could find another team that would want to take that contract off their hands. It's only $2.25.
With how out in the open it is, I would be surprised if Vinny doesn't follow through on what he has said though.

Lots of talks about how aggressive the Predators are being in getting a top 6 offensive forward.
Got to wonder if some of their top prospects like Kamanev and Fiala are in play.

Think they'd have any interest in Hudler or Jones?

Despite being cold as ice for 95% of the season Hudler is still on pace for over 40 points. It shouldn't be hard to convince playoff/contending teams he's worth a decent return.
Start the bidding!

Kamanev would be an outstanding 'get'. More developed than a first round pick, I would suggest if Calgary were to make an offer, they would have to add to Hudler. Nashville's prospect pool is similar to Calgary's in quality (depth at defense, weak at right wing, ect), but the NHL club is far more established. I think that you are right in that they may be willing to move the kind of player it would be unthinkable for Calgary to move.
Kamanev would be a better fit in Calgary than Drouin. The kind of big, intelligent player, with positional versatility, that would complement a Bennett or Poirier. (I'm not saying that he is a better player than Drouin, but in terms of team building a very attractive asset)

I would think a Hudler type player (contract/experience/cup/skill) are exactly the type of player they are looking for.
Jones, perhaps a lesser extent, but able to slot in their middle 6 and has a great shot and able to control the puck along the boards.
I think there are a few Flames that could help the Preds.
Smid or Engalland to provide some insurance on the back end and help during a hard playoff drive.
Colborne to round out 3rd line.
I don't know, I think we have a few guys who could definitely help some teams load up for a deep run.

I also think Victor Arvisson has a lot of potential.
He put up 55 points in 70 games last year as a rookie. This year he's over ppg.
Only thing is hes 5'9.

I feel like that if we are truly drafting best player available, we should really be picking more small/skilled players. As an organization, since the franchise moved here, we have had a lot of success in this area.
Even if we ended up with too many small players, we could always trade. That tends to be what happens when you draft BPA anyways.
Arvisson does look pretty promising.
