Serious incident developing in Philly. Uncontained and catastrophic engine failure for Southwest at FL300 out of LGA resulting in shrapnel penetrating the cabin and injuring passengers. Ten injured, one critical. She may have been partially sucked out of the plane after rapid decomp

We were leaving LaGuardia heading to Dallas. We were west of Philadelphia probably about 30,000 feet, and all of a sudden we just heard this loud bang, rattling and then it felt like one of the engines went out. The oxygen masks dropped and flight attendants did a good job. The pilot came on and said we're diverting to Philadelphia and, you know, there was a serious medical injury. I don't know much about that, but I was sitting in the front. With a couple passengers. We just got the mask on and as soon as we landed, we were thankful. The pilots did a great job, the crew did a great job. They got us down to Philly, and that's when I took the photo of the engine, and it appeared that it just shredded the left side engine completely. So we were coming down -- we dropped probably from 30,000 feet to 25,000 feet, and then the pilot kind of regained control and brought it down safely to Philadelphia. So we got off the plane and onto buses and we're trying to head over to the tarmac in Philly.
Update: It was the ejection victim due head trauma.

The incredibly composed female pilot was apparently one of the first women to fly an F-18 in the US Navy...

Shults, a native of New Mexico, graduated in 1983 from MidAmerica Nazarene University. In March 2017, she spoke at a luncheon on campus, where she was honored for her many accomplishments, including being one of the first female fighter pilots in the U.S. Navy.
A passenger said, “Tammie Jo Schults, the pilot came back to speak to each of us personally. This is a true American Hero. A huge thank you for her knowledge, guidance and bravery in a traumatic situation. God bless her and all the crew.”
Great work by this flight crew, back end crew, and NY/PHL controllers.
43-year-old mother of two from ABQ, Jennifer Riordan, has died. She was a VP of Community Relations at Wells Fargo.
Thanks for the video with the atc comm Acey. Powerful to hear it. Sounds like she did a great job of slowing down and being deliberate in the middle of the chaos.
She has her O2 mask on for the early parts due to the depressurization, and talking and breathing is awkward. Also I notice the amount of switching who was talking on ATC, as she was having several conversations with the back end crew about what was going on in the cabin.
Sounds like the crew did great work, really sad to hear about the fatality.
An uncontained engine failure is extremely rare.

Not to take away from the horrific South West tragedy
Did anyone fly on Air Canada's new/reconfigured CRJ900?
SeatGuru doesn't have them up yet and I'm curious about the best seats what to avoid.
I was on early revenue flights last year to/from Houston, new livery and everything, still had the new plane smell. I sat in 22A & F, and it was fine. That's as far back as I would go, because of the Lav.
I feel every window is misaligned on the updated 705/900 - hah.

So from what I see in these pics the engine didn't exactly fail, looks more like the cowlings all came apart and killed the engine. Maybe there was engine damage that vibrated the cowlings to the point of failure? But you would think they would detect that. Interesting that there's a blade missing, those things rarely break.

Might not be a UA232 or DL1288 type of failure, but the results are similar in that flying pieces of metal from the failed motor caused catastrophic damage, to a human life in this case. For all intents and purposes, this is DL1288 again.
