Draisaitl isn't eligible for a contract with performance bonuses next year unless he spends at least 100 days on IR this year and then signs a one-year deal.

I see. Even still… I could see it being a one year deal that he is willing to sign. No more. Probably around $12-13 million then. Oilers are too scared to sign it and lose him and McDavid in 2026. But if they don’t, they’ll lose him in 2025 and McDavid in 2026.

Why would he do this? Risk the possibility of a career ending injury and over $100MM to sign a 1 yr deal. His agent should be fired immediately.
My guess is he asked for $14MM-$14.5MM and they are trying to to get him for $13MM or less.

Maybe. I think the risk in trying to negotiate him down is too high. If he was willing to sign for a long time, I think they would have signed him by now.

The Oilers move Draisaitl at Trade Deadline to a team in a playoff position.

Bouchard is the one to offer a max term deal to; perfect age.
The best thing for us is if they lock up all of Draisaitl and McDavid's decline years for insane money. Why would anyone want them getting premium picks, prospects, and cap space instead of that?

My guess is that he doesn't have any intention of signing with the Oilers, and this is all theatre to make the team look like the bad guys.

Bouchard would have 30 points without McDrai

I was going to say something similar. His "discount" ask is probably $15.5 per, full NMC/NTC plus he gets to trade 1 roster player per year, and Katz can never speak to him again. Unrealistic requests. Something the Oilers wouldn't sign, so then he can say he tried but the team wouldn't meet his ask so he had to move on. He can leave as UFA without the city hating him.

And I think this is necessary because he knows he's going to have to play out next year with the Oilers. Heck, maybe he even wants to. Both team and player might recognize this is their last big chance to win a cup. But if he came out now and said he wasn't going to sign long term, that would make for an awkward year.

Drai and McAvi can basically name their own price to play anywhere, why would they want to extend in Edmonton? The only leverage Edmonton has is maybe the 8th year, but Drai and McAvi will need to take a hometown discount. They can probably make as much (if not more) money signing 7-year deals elsewhere.
Knowing that, the Oilers should trade them away to get some assets back, but they can't. It will be bad optics for the fans saying that they have basically given up, and also I don't think there will be a lot of takers for trades because other teams know that they can wait till UFA time to sign them.

And without an agreement or contract in place, both pissy and Mavi are rentals and therefore return less in a trade.

Why would either take less to play in Edmonton. It is an undesirable location, there are virtually no opportunities for additional advertising income, and the Oilers have traded every pick and prospect away to win now. The Oilers are the oldest team in the NHL with a bleak future.
The Oilers would certainly have to overpay be a wide margin to get their attention and I still don't think it gets done.
Name a single top player who played their entire career in Edmonton. There are none. Every single one left and so will these two.

If the wonder twins decline to continue their careers in Edmonton, this will not be the reason why. NHL players don't make much money in additional advertising income, and those star players who do manage to make some, are not restricted by geography. McDavid is already one of the highest earning players in endorsements and advertising. Going to play for another team will have no effect on that.

As much as it was unfortunate to have Gaudreau and Chucky decide to leave the team, it really serves as a powerful blueprint for the two stars in Edmonton in what continues to feel like the most probable outcome.

Having the actress wife should seal it, imo.
Literally no value in residing in Edmonton for 2/3 of the year.
Keeping him should take an overpayment.
Any oilers fans or fan writers are living in delusionville if they expect a discount after he's been on one for years.
Newsflash - Edmonton is an awful frozen wasteland that only has hockey.

McDavid is 4th in endorsements($4m) playing in friken Edmonton. #1 in the league is Mitch Marner($5.5m), why? because he plays in Toronto, because of local deals if you put McDavid in Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, Boston or NY his endorsements could approach his salary.
