Correct, it closed sometime later that day for repairs on the joints but I don't remember if it was actually a rough ride over them.

Both Waze and Google Maps are now updated. Not as fast as Apple, but not too bad.

Well Apple was actually updated before it opened by a few days, which I think explained why I saw more people doing u-turns.
Edit: looks like Google maps is directing me to 69th street, heading east off of Highway 8 to circle back to get on to the ring road. So not perfect yet.

^ Exact same thing has happened with pretty much every ring road leg in the little bit after it opens. The road looks fine and normal on the map, but for a couple weeks routings are glitched and don't always connect up properly or you'll get bogus estimated times.

Yeah, I was checking on times to get to atco field and it suggests that the ring road would be roughly the same time as it was taking sarcee. I am going to save much more than 3 minutes on the trip I can guarantee that.

Last night it wouldn’t give me any routes on the ring road but it is now.
It’s telling me it is only 3 minutes faster from Chinook to Tuscany vs taking Sarcee, but I guess that doesn’t account for people driving 130 on Stoney.

I've been spreading the rumor that the unofficial speed limit is 130.

Now add this up over multiple seasons... it's incredible.

It's also the type of driving you experience, highway driving is so much less annoying than inner city driving. Sure there are still lots of idiots on the ring road, but it's so much easier to avoid them on a multi-lane highway.
Also I don't think I'll ever have a reason to go through Sarcee/Bow intersection again and that makes me happy.

Google Maps uses a bunch of things to calculate the times as opposed to a simple time=distance/speed, like algorithms that factor in historical traffic patterns based on data from Android devices... fair to assume the engine isn't going to have a ton of data for a road that opened 2 days ago so I guess it makes sense for the times to be wonky initially. I bet for a while it'll overestimate any trip going through Sarcee/Bow too.

As in the other post, that’s 20 minutes per day both ways, so 100m per 5 day week, 5200m per year (86 hours or 3.6 days less driving not counting holidays etc).

It'll take a little bit for the calculations to normalize, as Acey suggests.
As a Tuscanite heading to Spruce Meadows fairly frequently (with Howie_16), I bet that we'll save at least 5 more minutes each way with this new leg opening, but possibly as much as 10. Though that's pretty optimistic as it doesn't factor in Sarcee traffic actually improving because of Stoney being open. Regardless, it'll be a much nicer drive with no lights between Tuscany and the one near Spruce Meadows.
The leg that really made things nicer was the part through the Tsuut'ina. Not having to deal with Glenmore, 14th, or Macleod was very welcomed indeed, and probably shaved the most time off of the Cavalry Commute.

Out of curiosity what was your commute?
It takes my dad and I 1:15 from the farm. I'm guessing we can get closer to 1:00 flat with a heavy foot.

I think that it was typically about 35 minutes, door to door. Before the Tsuut'ina leg opened, I think it took us 45 on a good day. Driving with a bit of purpose and without any snags, I wonder if 25 is now possible?

Chinook mall parking lot by the Bay to garage in Royal Oak - 23 mins. Probably 110km/h on west Stoney. It is glorious!! Head to MRU multiple times a weekly. Nice to have another option to get there, would make a U turn off of Glenmore East at Lakeview and then take Richard Road off of Glenmore West to get there.

I would estimate that the regular Tuscany-Spruce Meadows run will now be 30 minutes. I also think that it has now become quicker/easier for us to get to a Cavs game than a Flames game!
