I am not sure what you think is different here than what I posted. Yes, the Flames absolutely did not want to extend Gaudreau last summer at the number he was looking for. It would have been incredibly risky to do so because of the reasons I stated. Yes, Gaudreau did want to negotiate, and we are led to believe that they were in fact negotiating up until the start of the regular season.
What am I missing?

It’s hilarious to me that that segment is brought to you by Boston Pizza… I swear to god if Johnny is no longer a flame by the end of this week I’ll probably turn my fandom down a notch and not go out of my way to watch every game next year. Not until the Flames could prove their worth again at this point; I’ve watched every game save a couple since 2000 and it would be supremely disappointing to not be invested in the season like a usually am but losing Johnny would be a big, big blow for me as a fan.

For real though that was a pretty worrisome little dreger hit. He has been more careful the last two years after a stretch of unreliability.

I feel like if Gaudreau leaves, the Flames management team is open to criticism. They banked on winning last season, and it didn't happen. Pretty normal occurrence league-wide, but the risk was there all along and well known. By not signing Johnny long-term last summer they were at risk of losing him this summer.
I don't have a problem with them shooting their shot (not trading Gaudreau, trading lots of futures for Toffoli and Jarnkrok), but what happens next will really prove the quality of this organization. If Johnny leaves and they just run it back next year by adding a piece or two in free agency? That's a poorly managed team and an organization that isn't serious about winning a Stanley Cup.
Johnny not signing here would be the end of this era and slamming shut of any sort of "window" of competing...whether the team admits that or not is to be seen.
|
Yeah I agree with this. I know a lot of us were down on Johnny prior to this season, but the frustrating thing it looks like coaching was at least part of the issue, which is squarely on BT. One full season with Sutter and Johnny is a Hart candidate, finishes a +64, and was ppg+ player in the playoffs. It'll be brutal if we don't get to see more of Johnny under Sutter.

Same here… heart sank a little with that one. It really can be only 1 of 2 players as far as I’m concerned…

Genuine question though. Why would teams trade for a UFA? They could just wait till they could talk to him? Seems like a waste of assets. Could it be Tkachuk?

It could be about 30 guys if you go by what Dreger says. The other guy made a ton of inferences based on a non specific nug of information.

If I had to guess it's Kadri.
Colorado is probably the team that knows they wont even be trying to re-sign him for $8M plus and they might be able to get a pick for his rights if a team wants to try to beat free agency.

If a team is worried another team could have a similar attractive offer come UFA they may be willing to make a trade to gain some days of negotiations.

I am looking at what Ferraro said about developing a player and watching him turn into a star. Luckily he didn’t say draft the player because that would have removed Forsberg

Hmmm…. Someone talked to someone else about something that may or may not happen.
Look! I’m an insider!

Unless Ferraro has no idea who Dreger is talking about he mentions the team developed this player so Kadri wouldn’t really fit there

The Flames emoji in the Tweet is probably the "hint" Dreger referred to. Has to be Gaudreau he is talking about. I have my doubts that Dreger knows anything for certain though. Probably just speculation more than anything, and at this point, it's not that farfetched.

For every Joe Pavelski, Jeff Carter guy making $6m in their mid/late 30s, there's 10 guys not getting signed or getting $1-2m contracts like Corey Perry, Jason Spezza, Zach Parise.

Fair, but he's still likely getting something when his 7 year deal ends and is likely still a solid player who would get a few million at least.
Obviously a guaranteed 8 years is better, but my point was the total number still needs to be higher from the Flames, not 1 to 1 as often exampled.
