Personally I thought the Jays were overrated at the start of the year. Sure they have some decent bats and some decent pitching but guys like Johnson and Zaun are backups on most teams, so you take them out and you have guys like Jiri mentioned who should be on the farm. Both short stops are there for the defence not their hitting. Frank Thomas has been a complete bust and I am sure glad the A's didn't sign him to another deal and as mentioned VW has been brutal.

I'm not sure Johnson is a back-up on most teams. I consider him one of the most valuable pieces of the Jays lineup, when he's in there.

Based on Career performance, he is just a backup/probable platoon.
If he plays like he did last year? Definitely not.

Another solid outing for Dustin McGowan as the Jays take the final game against the Giants. Certainly struggled his first couple of cracks at the bigs, but seems to be much more poised of late. Between him and Shawn Marcum the Jays look to have found a couple guys to go with Doc and Burnett in the rotation.

Now if the jays can only bump the runs per game above 2.6 or whatever then I think they could put together a solid streak of wins. When Ryan, Chacin and Halladay went down I thought for sure they were going to get killed (which they did for a bit). But for the last while they have been doing better and if they could get some more consistent run support (cough wells cough, hell even frank thomas) then we could see some more exciting wins.

Okay here is what I did, I have went through all the AL teams, listed each teams LFer and stated yes or no to whether Johnson would play for that team instead of their current LWer.
Baltimore-Payton-undecided
BoSox-Manny-No
Yanks-Matsui-No
DRays-Crawford-No
White Sox-Podsednik/Mackowiak-Platoon
Cleveland-Dellucci-Platoon
Tigers-Monroe-No
Royals-Brown-Yes
Angels-Willits/Anderson-undecided
Twins-Kubel-Yes
A's-Stewart-undecided
M's-Ibanez-No
Rangers-Cat/Wilkinson-yes
So imo out of the AL teams only 3 teams would have Johnson as their starter.

Well I would definitely have him over Stewart. Defense alone he blows him out the the water. Offense is a wash.
Plus, he could play RF or centre too. I'd say on most teams, 1 of their 3 OF's are not as good as RJ.

Halladay looked great, jays lock up a W in the opener vs. the Nationals 7-2. Wells looked great which was really nice for a change, maybe this is the last time we'll say "maybe this is what he needed to break out of this slump". hope so.

...And another strong day for VW. Both he and The Hurt are starting to look better at the dish. A good sign
A win tomorrow and they are back at .500.

Thats sort of been the rallying cry for about 10 games now. The further they go into the season withoug hitting that mark, the more likely another mediocre season is. Although at this point in time the mediocre season is a pretty good bet.

This team NEEDS to win a fourth in a row for the first time this year to really get things rolling, and why stop there, the more the better. completing the sweep against the nats and carrying over the momentum is pretty important. hopefully this can be a real turning point inthe season for the jays. we'll see.

Marcum has played far above my expectations - it simply is amazing what he has done so far this season.
Lowering his ERA to 3.41 on the season, and striking out 61 over 58.0 IP. Rarely do pitchers come from the minors are actually start striking out MORE guys in the big leagues - he had a 9.0 K per IP and something like 7ish in AA/AAA - and usually those drop even further in the majors.
But instead Marcum is just rolling along and taking out guys left and right. Might have something to do with his style - it is somewhat unique - very few softer tossing (90-92 MPH) pitchers who are right handed, flyballers who strike guys out - actually, I can't think of any off the top of my head who fit that type of profile.

Once again the Jays choke away a chance at .500 against a fairly easy opponent. Should give the GM a pretty clear picture that this team ain't got it.

Towers actually played pretty well today. He gave the Jays a chance to use their bats and score some runs, but it didn't happen. Against a lefty, no less.
Another day off tomorrow?

don't see how you can blame Towers for that one. It was a pretty decent outing for him. The bats failed today, plain and simple.

You are right...I am not that frustrated with the way he pitched today but he seems so consistently mediocre. He gives up too many hits...I feel he is an automatic loss everytime he takes the mound. I don't expect a Cy Young from the 5th starter but I hope he can pitch .500 ball.

Didn't really have a problem with him only giving up 4 runs over 7 innings, but he always seems to give up runs right after the Jays score in their half of the inning. But he's a fifth starter, hopefully Chacin can come back soon and fill that role. Hopefully, AJ's injury isn't serious as it looks like he'll be going on the 15 day DL, so be prepared for more Towers.
