This is the chicken or the egg scenario.

I distinctly remember when Kane (when he was in SJ and beyond) acted like the biggest tough guy in the world. Nurse too. Does anyone remember a single time last season where either one of those guys said or did a thing?

Lucic being in the lineup did make a difference. If anything was said, Lucic would skate by the bench and say something, and everything would die down. He didn't HAVE to jump Kane or Nurse. I guess we will see next game what happens. My bet is that this season, both Kane and Nurse are going to be much more noticeable.

Flames record against the Oilers with Lucic in the lineup was not good

Every game, including the playoff series they dummied us in.

Revisionist history my ass. You are changing the damn goalposts as usual. I didn't say squat about records.

Score wise, yes.

Not with the antics. Like I said, Kane and Nurse are going to be a whole lot more noticeable out there, and Flames won't have an answer to that. Flames will get dummied on the scoreboard, and physically dominated as well. That's a demoralizing way to lose.

they lost on the scoreboard and got pushed around

Nurse and Kane are always idiots

Lucic did nothing.

He was gifted valuable ice time and wouldn’t touch anyone in Edmonton.

Look I don’t really care who wins the antics battle. Kane was running around last night as though he owned the place because the Flames were no threat to win the game.

Physically, too. Kane and Nurse weren’t any worse than usual.

Lucic is a fantasy. He was respected by the players but he was so strict to the code that he never fought nor intimidated anyone. He was there to loaf around and fight an enforcer once every 20 games or so. He was an absolute shell, and even in the short time he wasn’t, he wouldn’t do anything against the Oilers.

It’s not chicken or the egg. It’s all egg, because nobody was too chicken to do anything when Lucic was around.

Remember the game against the Rangers? Trouba lights up Dube, so Tanev answers the bell. Then he lights up Kadri, and who answers the bell? Right, Dube. Lucic played almost 15 minutes in that game and registered 2 hits. What hockey player is scared of Milan Lucic? What’s he going to do to them? Scowl?

At least in the 90s, that crowd got 3-4 minutes of ice time per game.

They can certainly add toughness but need someone who can actually play too

Lucic didn't do much against the Oilers in either category

Exactly, but they were fairly unnoticeable last year.

Marek and Friedman picked up on this, right around the 4:26 mark.

[YOUTUBEl8QjHW_fVIM[/YOUTUBE]

Seravalli mentioned this in the barn burner too.

Sorry, but this didn't happen with Lucic (or Gudbranson) around. Nurse wasn't punching guys with impunity in front of the net either. You may not think this is a big deal, but this is demoralizing. Lucic prevented this from happening. You don't need Lucic if your team has a lot of team toughness. Flames don't have it, and Lucic is going to be more missed this year than people suspect.

He didn't win or lose games for the Flames. I think his presence helped the Flames be one of the healthier teams too. Kane did start running around last year, and Lucic went right up to him and said something. You didn't notice Kane the rest of the game.

Reaves last year was running around smashing guys, and Lucic went up to him. I thought for sure that they were going to fight, but it didn't happen. However, Reaves became fairly unnoticeable after that for the rest of the game too.

Point is, Lucic didn't have to fight. If players didn't listen to him, then he would do something - like he did to Zadorov that year, or that punk from Buffalo trying to make a name for himself, and Lucic ended up suspended. You don't notice this in games, that's cool. No point in continuing to smash our heads together trying to win an argument. Doesn't matter to me. I am just sure that in the next Oilers-Flames game, a few of their players are going to be a whole lot more louder and physical.

As a side note:
That whole exchange with Kane says it all about this team. Nobody had an answer. Team didn't suddenly band together and use it to light a fire under their own butts. Nobody stepped up to prove Kane wrong. Kane could really see it in the team that there is nobody willing to step up. This team has no fight in it, and they don't have much pride. It is hard to watch.

I do agree that Lucic provided some benefits to this team and was not as useless as some people are making him out to be.

But that's not the big problem here. Teams that are way better than the Flames don't have anyone near as tough as Lucic and they thrive.

And the exchange with Kane is really not that big a deal IMO. It just so happened we heard what he said, that stuff happens pretty regularly I think.

What a hilariously bad effort yesterday by the road team. The fans that drove all the way up put more effort in the car than the team did on the ice. If it weren’t for all the 5 on 3 PP’s, this would’ve been a laugher.

They should also be embarrassed, but I guess with retirement contracts that doesn't really matter.

This time though it’s a question the Flames organization needs to find an answer to.

Kane and Nurse took dumb penalties

beating them would be the way to make them answer...not instigating a fight because of words

Guess we’ll find out if you are right.

But what I think is going to happen until the Flames pushback is that teams are going to all play the same style against them. Physical and pushing them around. Taking runs at players.

All because of what Kane said.

“Who’s actually going to do anything” or whatever he said.
