Sure, but someone was saying he should just declare now. I'm just saying the possibility of an extension is a factor in his pricetag.

Not so. It was reported last year when Gaudreau left by a few insiders close to the team that Hanifin loved Calgary, and loved playing for the Flames.

Ryan Leslie was on the radio this week talking about how much Hanifin loves Calgary and wants to stay here...so who knows.

I do think with Hanifin though I wonder how much is him not wanting to be here...versus the team not wanting to pay him what he's asking for.

I doubt they want to give Hanifin any more than Weegar's $6.25. Hanifin is probably looking for closer to $7.0-7.5M is my guess.

Once again it's probably more that he doesn't want to take a discount to stay here, more than not wanting to be here at all.

The fact that he's young, coupled with a bad UFA crop this year, I'm optimistic we can get quite a lot for him. This will be Connie's first big move, so I hope he gets us something good.
It's defintely less of a blow buts it's still a big blow.
Defence is pretty thin after weegar and rasmus.

Kylington is a wildcard. Year off after his one good season.
Tanev probably isn't long for being a top 4D given his age and injuries.

Flames don't have anyone in the pipeline close to stepping up as a top 4 D. Poirier, solovyov and kuznetsov seem a couple years away.

True, but this expedites the inevitable retool. I don’t give a flying f what Florida did this year, the flames team does not have the capability of doing the same. Gotta get faster and quicker at a reasonable cost and the only way of doing that is through the draft. Hanifin is doing the flames a favour. Now it’s up to Conroy to maximize his asset. Beautiful in a year like this.

Someone just linked a tweet by Ryan Leslie yesterday where he said he's heard from Hanifin and by all accounts "loved it here and wants to stay"

I think it just goes to show you that you just have to let the experts do it. These players give lip service almost 100% of the time, they dont want to anger people and they don't want to upset fans but the truth is out there and some insiderrrs get lucky with tidbits.

GL Hanifin, sure hope Calgary gets a haul for him.

I'm hoping for all kinds of action at the draft. Great chance for Connie to really make some big changes to this team.

Will be super interesting if none of these 7 pending UFA's are extended by the draft. I think Connie is serious about not repeating the Johnny fiasco. There shouldn't be any way we lose valuable assets for nothing.

Hanifin would likely get a nice return, especially with the apparent lack of quality D men available throughout the league.

Hanifin was good for Calgary, Calgary was good for Hanifin. You shake hands, thank them, and move on.
No shame in that.

Well hypothetically none of them are eligible to have official contracts before July 1st.

But yeah I think by the draft we will have a pretty clear view of what the teams plans may be.

Friedman said something similar to this on 32 Thoughts a few days ago. And it’s true. Sometimes players want to move on. It is what it is. The team should get a good return for him

Don’t sleep on Gilbert.

2.47 GA/60 (T2 w/Tanev)
23.96 SA/60 (3rd behind Tanev and Weegar)
2.33 xGA/60 (3rd behind Weegar and Tanev)

Limited sample size, obviously, but Dennis Gilbert can defend.

It's sorta the Carolina model right?

And doesn't mind dropping the gloves either. Never a quality to be overlooked.

6 ft 2, 216 - not huge, but good size.

I’d be extremely disappointed if Gilbert wasn’t a regular next year, and it’s confusing why Sutter wouldn’t have deployed him more…

Like, we can’t play the kids because they’ll make a mistake, but Aaron Stecher’s 3.48 GA/60 is okay because…

Maybe Conroy can sign another Swedish defenseman, OEL for cheap?

OEL sucks.

3.91 GA/60
33.89 SA/60
3.04 xGA/60

He’s done.
