The fact that Steinberg specifically called out that he believes the draft is going to be a much more important part of the team building philosophy under Conroy has me giddy.
It’s the absolute life blood of an organization in a market like ours. We need to get away from spending futures for players, and absolutely need to dial back our activity in the free agent market.

I still hate the fact that we actually made a trade to acquire a 1st round pick to just trade it away to dump a players contract. Thought we were actually getting some draft capital for once.

Sounds like the assistant coaches are free agents on June 30th.

Yep, believe this game out a while ago. No one on the coaching staff (nor the management of the team) is believed to have contracts for next season.

Agreed can't wait to shift back to the draft that's how you win.
Our roster is the way it is because of drafted players bolting.
It's going to be the best way to compete.

Interested to see how they approach this. Do locals become a higher priority?

Absolutely. Needs to be THE focal point moving forward, especially if there won’t be a tear it down rebuild.

They shouldn’t. You should always draft best player available. Things will always happen, but you always extract value from going the best player available route. If you prioritize anything else, you lessen the value of the pick

100%. You cannot start drafting the 27th best pick from the 16th spot or the 50th best player from the 40th spot because you're jilted by players leaving. That is a disastrous strategy.

I wonder if Conroy will continue to trade 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks for plugs at every deadline when there are young players that are pushing for spots.

For comparison, Treliving traded away 34 draft picks and acquired 23 (some of which came at the cost of trading down our 1st rounder a few times). This gets even more skewed when you look at the quality of picks traded and acquired. He traded away a lot of high picks and the ones he acquired were mostly later round picks.
Players drafted by other teams using Flames draft picks traded by Treliving include Dobson (Hamonic acquisition), Formenton (Lazar acquisition)*, and Kyrou (Elliot acquisition). There is of course no knowing if the Flames would have drafted the same players with those picks. Asterisk next to Formenton because of off-ice issues, but was a quality player.

Benning. Tkachuk was 10 years old when Nonis last worked for the Canucks. Although, if he had lasted one more season in Toronto, he would have had the chance to not draft Tkachuk there.

People call Treliving Tre. Pretty sure Pat did as well
I think it’s immaterial to the way he performs his job, and when he does it, he will be ‘all business’ sufficiently that it should withstand the occasional informal mention and not sully his credibility

Everyone thinks this way. But examples everywhere from newspapers to TV reporters show why you need to draw clear, bright lines at some point. It's not a knock on Steinberg... he's human and an honestly invested media personality.
This is why I said it's a fine line, and I hope someone else is tasked with drawing the line for him.

Darryl never got enough heat for cashing in to the tune of $8mil for one good season but letting his assistants hang in the wind and eventually get nothing.
Rod the Bod refused to sign his deal in Carolina until all the support staff was looked after contractually.
Says a lot about each of their character.

It'll be nice to not have to hope that the Flames over pay their stars so that the team doesn't have enough money to pay veteran middle to lower roster players that end up blocking prospects, or that we trade picks for.
