OK, go for it - what metaphors are you talking about, and how were they cheesy? I'm interested to see this analysis.

Anyway, I don't think it's the best episode of TV ever either. That is an absurdly high bar to clear. It might be top 20 though... hard to say, and also depends on what the rules are (like, one episode per show, or what).

Basically, what it boils down to is that trying to rank it against other episodes of other shows seems weird and pointless. At the end of the day, it was a really really great episode of television. Like, objectively great. There's no room to fault any aspect of the script, the acting is obviously exceptional, everything to do with the design from sets on down is top tier, and it is beautifully lit and shot (the scene with the strawberries... hot damn). So 7/10 is... not really defensible, but whatever, no accounting for taste.
Seeds into strawberries nurtured by Frank, just like Bill's growth as a person. Only way it could've more obvious is if someone spoke to the camera.

And the way the sun shone, like the sunshine of Frank's love warming Bill to be more open.

good thing there isn't any filipinos in the show so far.

Imagine the outrage if the transmissions started in Manilla instead of Jakarta??

Man, I loved this episode. It was great television.

This show is so good and I am so sick of nit-picking, I am really just going to post bromides.

In Mad Men Don Draper takes off from the hotel he's staying at with Peter for a business then and follows a women named Joy to Palm Springs and meets her Bohemian crew. Don Draper is following Joy.

It happens, does it require a deep reading? No, but I'm not sure that makes it inherently cringe.

One night in Bangkok was originally supposed to be One night in Manilla.

Murray Head would have to walk the streets looking out for Yoho if he didn't change the song....

Was anyone else wondering how far they'd zoom out on that ending shot with the open bedroom window?

It was doubtful they would of shown any gore because of the style of episode it was, but with each millimeter it was zooming out, I was truly wondering when it would stop.

"They aren't going to show anything..... are they???!!!"

EDIT: From the comments:

You know music is good, when it can be played on wedding, funeral, birth, deathbed, engagement, UFO welcoming...

Hahaha... alright, dude. Sure. I'm with Nik on this one. I mean, if there was anything remotely allegorical in that scene it was the concept of trading a gun for strawberries - that's much more representative of Frank's effect on Bill.

No, but only because it was a tribute to the title screen of the game, so I knew where it would stop. It's not exactly the same angle or the same window but it was pretty clear what it was supposed to be paying tribute to (as Mazin has now confirmed).

It's good, but it was a bit off-putting just because that song is so tied to Arrival for me. And it's as if it's the only Richter anyone ever uses. Someone needs to use this:

I know I suggested the nitpicking was bad but I wasn’t prepared for “everything is a metaphor, it’s so obvious” guy to enter the thread.

For some reason I just assumed those guys failed first year Creative Literature and then disappeared forever. Now they’re watching television? God help us.

Noooooooo they can’t call Neo “The One.” What a ham-fisted metaphor.

Also #### Ben Shapiro.

Interesting, I should look into his work further. I am also a bit of a fan of melancholy cello music.

I'm clearly a neophyte for not picking up anything with the strawberries or flowers. Did the wine also symbolize how something can get better with age if treated correctly? I did pick up the obvious parallels between Bill/Frank and Joel/Ellie at least.

Since the best episode of TV was being discussed and you mentioned Mad Men, I have to add "Guy Walks Into An Advertising Agency" as a contender.

I was more noticing it was a second storey window but they went into a bedroom on the main floor.
