People need to get comfortable with the fact that Krebs is the best prospect on either club.

Hmm Vegas has made mistakes for sure.
Suzuki + Tatar + 2nd for Pacioretty is a bad trade long term
They gave up a lot of assets for Tatar in the first place which was bad (1st, 2nd, 3rd)
Glass wasn't a great pick at 6th overall.
They made a bit of a mess of their cap and goalie situation with the whole Fleury / Lehner debacle.
Firing Gallant for DeBoer is still a bit questionable IMO.
Difference is the expansion draft allowed them to have a stock pile of assets because other teams really screwed up that expansion draft, and that means that the mistakes they have made can be covered up easily.
And then the other thing is that we are talking about the city of Las Vegas here...which provides an advantage that Calgary just can't compete with in terms of getting guys like Stone and Pietrangelo to go there to start with.

I do not think Vegas is offering up a 25 year old who was 6th in Norris voting, and has a 5.2 million caphit for 4 years. For a player out for months. Just doesn't seem likely.

Oh for sure, I'd have been fine if the Flames added to try and get over that. Zary and Pelletier etc.
No way the Flames can beat a Theodore and Krebs package though. It would have to be Tkachuk/Hanifin plus the added futures.

Full on Sabres and Golden Knights no mention of any other team.
On Jeff Marek show right now

Fork off.
Vegas being around every big name is getting old. (Stone, Pietrangelo, Eichel)
Giving up Krebs and/or Norris candidate Theodore, how much of a step forward would they even take?
I wish teams would just stop dealing with these mofos

I don't know... Johnny's move last night and Markstom's paddle save were kind of game breakers. Just my opinion.

Well, hey... Sutter brought the Flames to Game 7 of the SCF with a much, much worse group before, taking out three division champs with game breakers like Naslund, Yzerman, Lidstrom, etc. to get there. He can do it again.

That Vegas team is getting older, have spent all their draft capital/assets, and has cap issues.
And the core is getting old.
Pacioretty - 32 - 2 years left
Pietrangelo - 31 - 6 years left
Martinez - 34 - 3 years left
Dadonov - 32 - 2 years left
Marchessault - 30 - 3 years left
Stone - 29 - 6 years left
Karlsson - 28 - 6 years left
Lehner - 30 - 4 years left
Tuch, Whitecloud, Krebs, Hague and Theodore are really their only key pieces under 26. If they move 2-3 of those guys to get Eichel then they really are in a mode where they have to win in the next two seasons.
|
Yes, hopefully they turn into the current version of the Sharks. The sooner the better. I'm betting they have a few years left of dominating though before that happens, especially if they snag Eichel.

People mad at Vegas should be redirecting their anger to the incompetency of several NHL GM's that created this monster.
Vegas was the most asset-rich franchise in NHL history from JUMP. There's no competing with the prospect and asset capital they accumulated.
It's too bad, and highly disappointing for the Flames because it keeps them in the dreaded middle zone. Not bad enough to get high draft picks, too good for ownership to greenlight a rebuild. This was an opportunity to edge into elite territory and have a fighter's chance, or to totally bomb out and do a proper rebuild.
Now, we can hope that more tinkering on the edges solidifies this roster as a playoff contender. It's a scary proposition with some huge contract renewals on the horizon and a history of inconsistent performance from those players.

Johnny playing at his peak is a game breaker.
He just hasn't been at that level the past 2 seasons.

You wanna see Johnny at his peak, you go get him a center like Eichel

To me, it's no coincidence he's returned to a gamebreaker when separated from Monahan.

If it ends up being Theodore + Krebs + Hague + Unprotected 1st round pick for eichel, I think most of us will understand why Calgary could not make the trade. That is virtually every valuable piece under the age of 25 that Vegas has and would have for the next few years.
A huge gamble. It could pay off.
Now, if it’s something like Theodore + protected first round pick, I think many people will think Calgary could have tried harder to out-bid Vegas. Calgary doesn’t have a piece like Theodore but they could make a different kind of bid… focused on more futures and prospects.

It is ridiculous how much of an asset pool Vegas was able to accumulate right from its inception that allowed it to be a contender for every big name that became available.
The rules for expansion are deeply flawed. Luckily Seattle didn't take advantage of it nearly as well.
But screw vegas, man.

The rumoured original ask from Vegas was Smith, Hague, Krebs and a 1st. If Theodore is now stepping in for Hague, then the price has been driven up.

When did Peyton Krebs become the next Crosby?
Seems to be a bit overrated in my opinion.
