Not going to stop the canucks from taking 3rd in the pacific. They control their own destiny as do we. We need to finish 3rd or we won’t make it with points for a wildcard spot

There's no way the NHL can sell legitimacy if they used points based on different numbers of games. That's ridiculous.

Which is why they absolutely will not do what is being suggested in that tweet. The sheer volume of lawsuits that would occur would be staggering. You're effectively cheating teams out of millions of dollars because they'd played fewer games, and the cup itself would be completely illegitimate. They'd be better off cancelling the whole season.
But if that happens, what happens to the draft? Same type of problem.

If they change the point systems the teams that were in and now out are probably going to want compensation for playoff revenue lost.
You also probably can't just change the points system arbitrarily without a vote by the owners, and I doubt they'd approve a percentage points system except for a couple of teams.
I think its likely that if the season is postponed, and the bans aren't lifted by lets say Mid April, the season will be cancelled.

Ya, that sounds the most likely/reasonable option.
God I just hope they don't give everyone even odds in the draft. You just know the Coilers will win it.

Umm no. They won’t throw the canucks out because they played one less game and within 1 point of 3rd. Who knows how they would deal with it except to ensure some level of equality

If they go points percentage, I think the Flames get Wildcard 2.
Canucks .5652
Nashville .5652
Flames .5642
Winnipeg .5634 (point percentage if they beat the oilers tonight)
So by that, the Canucks get the 3rd Pacific spot, Nashville gets WC1 and the Flames get WC2. Jets miss. All other teams are either higher or lower than those four and don't matter.

I guess play in games between the teams who aren't clearly ahead when GP are accounted for would work for everyone.

Single playoff game between cgy and van, and other similar teams within a win of being in the POs, in order to determine who qualifies?
All qualifying games played within a week to empty arenas.

Yes, this. They are trying to figure out if they can be sued if they continue to play games during a pandemic and someone gets sick as a result.

Actually that is likely what they would do, as it’s the only fair method. The point system is based entirely on similar games played. The standings already reflect that in some cases. If two teams are tied in points, the standings will have the team with the least number of games played as the leader. Technically it should be based on regulation wins.

I see no legal reason why the league can’t change its rules as they want. I’m sure there are bylaws that govern how decisions are made. An owner won’t be suing the other owners if they don’t like how playoffs are determined.
