To me it looked like he tried to pay it back but just got run over by a bigger player. Bennett knew he was on the ice and knew he was looking for him. He took the hit to get a shot. He could have avoided it.
I think there’s something to be said for eliminating a “head hunt” like this, whether the hit is clean or not, but I don’t know how you would do that. If that was the case then Doighty, Bennett and MacDermid would all be guilty of it and... what? In the box? Misconducts? Suspensions after the fact?
Maybe they can bring in a 2 min “intent to injure” penalty where a near miss can be penalized? I wouldn’t mind that. Cheap is cheap regardless of if you land it.
I still wouldn’t want to see a hit like that removed from the play of the game though. There non-contact hockey you can watch at your local rink if you want that. Yes, we know a lot about concussions. If the players are super concerned about it they can lobby for rule changes. As it stands they are fully aware of the rules and the risks they are taking.
You can’t force something like this to change to suit your sensibilities. I don’t like the violence of the UFC so I don’t watch it. I’m not gonna go try to get them to stop jumping on each other and elbowing one another I’m the face until they pass out because I don’t like it. If I don’t like that then i shouldn’t watch UFC.
