“(General manager Kyle Dubas) and I talk about this every day," Babcock said. "We think Willy’s gonna be here and we think Willy’s gonna be here for a long time. We think he’s gonna be a career Leaf. That’s what we think.” - Babcock

Percentage of the cap didn't mean as much back then, the true superstars on cup contenders made the money, Lecavalier($10m) Crosby($9) Malkin($9) Ovechkin($9)..etc. the rest got scraps.

Toews and Kane's 2nd contracts were signed mid way thru the 09-10 season, they both got off to a great starts and the team was in first place. they finished with 88 points(Kane-9th) and 76 points (Toews 35th) Not only did the eye test show these two drove the team after winning the cup it proved a great move locking them up for $6.3 a few months before the cup win.

Maybe it's just me being biased but the eye test on Draisaitl is such that he should hand McDavid half of his salary. He's truly a 50 point player on his own.

I'm sorry? Kapanen plays in the Pacific now? Atlantic is arguably the best division in hockey. As of right now the third best team in the entire NHL wouldn't get home ice advantage in the first round because the Leafs and Lightning are Top 2.

The 4th place team would be two points ahead of the Flames for first in the Pacific.

The fifth place team would be two points back of second in the Pacific with a game in hand.

Nylander comes from a hockey family and comes from money. He ain’t going to take Babcock’s BS head games.
Oh wow, it's surprising how many ex-players there are on this site. When did you play for Babcock?

Why is Babcock even talking about this? It really isn't his place, seems dumb.

If he sits back and the Nylander camp holds firm taking the year off he will face heavy criticism in that market especially if they don't succeed in the playoffs. It will be interesting to see if the Nylanders are willing to forego a season of hockey. I really don't see the point of holding out this long if only to sign a deal they could have signed weeks ago. Maybe they will dig their heels in deep.

If he doesn't sign and holds out his trade value will tank. Trade him now (to the Flames ) or sign him.

Nylander knows at this point regardless of what the contract is, he is getting traded. Maybe not until the summer, but he is as good as gone.

So who knows, and maybe Dubas caves to the numbers and then sees what he can get after the season OR he already has a deal lined up but the acquiring team is hopeful WN comes down a bit more on the AAV.

I can also see where WN says nope and goes and signs in the KHL for the rest of the season and then has his agent negotiate a trade to a destination he is willing to accept in the off season that is agreeable to the Leafs.

I suppose from our point of view it's hard to predict seeing we don't know how far the Leafs and Nylanders are really apart. If it's only $300k a season as reported you have to imagine it gets done but term may also factor in. They were just talking on 960 about how his dad was supposedly very stubborn and difficult to deal with so it's probably a pretty difficult situation for the Leafs with their cap situation and Matthews and Marner contracts coming up.

Yeah the old man is the X factor here no question.

Lewis Gross is a really good agent and a guy i would have a hard time believing is counselling his client to miss the whole year knowing the money lost will never ever be recouped.

Oh and for those unaware, he is also Gaudreaus agent.

I believe Nylander has the same agent as Johnny. I remember there being a story whe n Johnny signed that his message to the agent was that he does not want to miss any games. I suspect we would have been in a similar boat had it not been for Johnny stepping in and taking control.

I am also curious if we now see a number of RFAs switch to this agent. For the agent, at the expense of Nylander, I believe the player does get some leverage in GMs knowing that this agent will push his players to sit to the deadline...the leads survived without him, bubble teams might lose a whole season with a key RFA sitting for 2 months.

I thought he gave Gaudreau bad advice, which cost Gaudreau a decent start to his year after missing camp, and I think the same about his aadvice to Nylander, which will at a minimum result in a trade and might lose him millions of dollars that won't be recouped if he misses a season.

He misread Treliving and I think he's done the same now with Dubas.

JG didn't lose a dollar and in fact may have gotten the most from the Flames that he could have.

As for WN you can be sure his father is a factor in all this and possibly the biggest.

He's already cost Nylander close to $2.5M this season - will his hardball negotiating recoupe that over the term of this contract?

He's also about to get Nylander traded off of what appears to be a perennial Cup contender for the next decade.
