At some point this becomes a battle of wills, if Nurse was willing to fit into the Oilers cap this deal would have been done. I'm thinking as much as they're talking 2 or 3 hundred K, we're talking closer to a million on a bridge deal and he wants over 4 million bucks.

I'm expecting that we don't see Nurse in Oilers silks until mid October, or he signs a one year deal which I think gets him arbitration rights. Or he tries to force a trade.

Darnell Nurse is not the Oilers’s best defenseman.

The big difference here is that while Gaudreau missed training camp in 2016 he did practice and play several games in the ultra-competitive World Cup of Hockey along with the very best hockey players on the planet. This undoubtedly significantly mitigated the impact of missing Flames camp that year for Gaudreau, and it is a luxury neither the Oilers nor Nurse enjoys.

Ok, right now, he's the second best defenseman that the Oilers have. Klefbom had one good year a couple of years ago, outside of that, he's been mediocre at best. Last year he was hot garbage, so until he shows that he's "back to form" from a couple of years ago, Nurse brings more to the table then him.

Clearly Larsson is their best defenseman which is laughable when you think about it, he's got nothing in the way of an offensive game, and he's ok defensively but last year he took a step back.

Right now no Oilers defenseman really has the two way game that Nurse has, and at best he's a middle pairing guy.

Yeah there's a large difference between a top ten scorer in the league and a 4th defenseman. Calgary missing Gaudreau would have been a much bigger blunder. But it didn't happen and probably never would have happened.

On the other hand, you have the Oilers who simply pissed away the cap space in a drunken summer spending spree on depth forwards without considering what they might need to pay Nurse. I will continue to contend that he's nothing more than a #4 and potentially could be a useful #2 if paired with a true #1.

Too bad the Oilers also pissed away all their Giordanos cause they don't have a #1. Obviously. Maybe Russell can still effectively move up and down the lineup like he did with us? Haha.

Jeff Petry would probably be handy to have around right about now.

After seeing the Karlsson return, Oilers probably could have had him for a package like:

Yamamoto
Benning
Bear
1st
2nd

If they didn't over pay Draisaitl, didn't overpay an unknown khl backup goalie, if they didn't commit term/$ to Russell, if they didn't sign lucic, then sure....

Heck imagine if they hadn't made terrible trades.

If that package gets it done, then it would have been Hall for Karlson +.

But yeah, Larson is good I guess.

You can’t disregard the cap. There are only a handful of teams who could have afforded to move out prospects and picks and hope to sign Karlsson. Oilers aren’t one.

This is the phrase that appears on the Chiarelli family’s coat of arms, alongside a bag of Old Dutch and that picture of George W Bush holding a phone upside down.
