I disagree, I suspect the choose by plebiscite people have an equal scaling of commitment to the yes and no votes.
If it was don't care, or whatever the majority wants I could agree with you.

The concern I have with a plebiscite is that the Olympics cost money federally and provincially. If you only ask the people of Calgary what they want to do, you're not asking all the people who will be affected by the games.
As a resident of Didsbury, I would love to see another Olympic Games in Calgary. But I don't get a say regardless of my tax dollars being spent on it as well.

does anyone think Canada getting a part of the 2026 world cup would lessen the feds also wanting to put money towards an Olympics the same year?

You think there is a situation that exists where this government would spend LESS money on something? I'd be shocked.

Yes. This would that situation. Security alone will be very expensive for both, so it's likely an either/or. Can't see any significant federal money now, and with Edmonton getting World Cup games, the provincial money might be even harder to get now. Not a very good day for Calgary 2026, surely they were rooting for Morocco.

Edmonton may not be getting any games at all. Still TBD on the actual final list of cities that get games.
I believe the overlap issue has been addressed by the Mayor and the Feds have enough money to cover 2 significant sporting events in the 2020's. Take that comment for what it's worth though.

Crazy as this sounds, I actually think Montreal is more likely to be dropped than Edmonton. Edmonton has a better stadium and allows for more "equitable" distribution for Canada than just Montreal and Toronto. And given Nenshi's desperation for the Olympics to happen, I'm basically ignoring everything he says on this.

I dunno, Montreal and Toronto are closer together, and actual cities we would want to show off to the world. Any teams having to play in Edmonton are going to be seriously unimpressed.

I agree. I think Edmonton and Toronto are probably best suited for games. Montreal does have the capacity and planned enhancements to Olympic Stadium planned though..
I wonder how much money is actually going to be allocated to building improvements and supporting infrastructure for the World Cup.

Which is why we're gonna send Burkina Faso and North Korea to play there. Surely they can't think E=NG right?

Obviously someone hasn't bee reading the "American Politics" thread.
By 2026 it's just gonna be Korea.
Thanks Trump!

I understand that Mexico and Canada are set and the cities that need to be dropped are all from the states.
for Canada it will be 4-3-3 for games in each city.

That's not what the CBC article said.
Quote:
But even though the bid has been accepted, it doesn't mean Canada is guaranteed 10 games in those three cities come 2026. Canada's allotment could be reduced as the FIFA council — a 30-plus-member board overseen by Gianni Infantino, the president of soccer's world governing body — has the final say on the number of games each country gets and the specific locations.

Politically at the provincial level - "you're supporting Edmonton, so you must also support Calgary!"
Federally - "you're supporting Montreal and Toronto (again), so you must also support Calgary!"

Here's Rob Kerr talking with MRU Health and Physical Education Department Chair, David Legg this afternoon: https://www.sportsnet.ca/960/the-big...nter-olympics/
Listening to the interview, he's obviously in favour of the Olympic bid, but he doesn't think the World Cup should really have any impact on Olympic funding. As he points out, Canada will only be hosting about 12.5% of the World Cup Games, and the Americans will be mostly running the show. Edmonton will most-likely only get 3 games total.
From a logistics and cost perspective, it probably won't be much different for Edmonton to host 3 World Cup games than it is for them to host the Grey Cup. Rather than a bunch of drunken idiots from Saskatchewan showing up in their city, it will be a bunch of drunken idiots from other parts of the world.
I think if it was going to be a problem, it would have been shut down months ago. Everyone knew the World Cup was a near-certainty, so the Federal and Provincial governments could have said no to the Olympics at any time if it was going to be an issue.

Yeah, I guess I should have said "in addition to" instead of "rather than".
