My two 5km eggs just hatched into a 76 Polliwag and a 129 Voltorb.
I've had a Squirtle in my area for the last 2 hours. I've walked around twice and can't find him.

Damn squirtle. I've found 2 but there's no way they are going to get strong enough at this rate.

So I'm going to download this to play with my son, but I'm reading this thread and I have no idea what the hell you guys are talking about. I'm going to get my ass kicked like I do when I go to a friends house and play Call of Duty.

I've caught 4 Pikachu now and they are only 10-15 CP. Seems impossible to get one gym ready.

Getting your butt kicked at Pokemon go is like losing at a scavenger hunt with no time limit. It's not really a "loss", just temporarily behind.
You probably already have the gist of it... you follow a cartoon map that's pretty much a google map with no directions. You walk in the real world to get close to pokestops and trigger random appearances of pokemon. Pokestops give you items you use (ie: pokeballs to catch pokemon, potions and revives which are for battling, feel free to throw these away if you have no use for them and your backpack is full). Pokemon appear on the map and you tap them to engage them (to throw pokeballs).
Ignore the rarity of pokemon and ignore gyms, play at your own pace, you'll have a blast.

One tip Jay. When you go to a pokestop swipe and spin the circle in the middle and you get free balls.

Nah, you'll be fine. You'll be in my boat. I'm just collecting good ones which gives you XP to level your character up, which in turn lets you find better ones. I haven't even bothered venturing into the fighting other players part of the game (the gyms).

I went to my first gym today.
I don't really see the point. I beat 2 of the 3 guys but since I have no chance in beating all 3 on any gym, why should I be doing this? I only got 100 xp for doing this..

It's the perfect game to play at your own pace. Don't worry about gyms or looking for rare Pokemon, just go on a nice walk (try to walk from Pokestop to Pokestop, the blue markers) and just catch everything you see.

You can go with others to the gym and win. It helps to do it in groups then each person has to defeat a smaller poll of defenders.
If you hold a gym you get pokecoins (only way to get them without paying) and stardust. 10 coins and 500 stardust per day per defender.

Question for the fellow Poke-bro's:
What does helping to defend a gym do?
I dropped off a guy at a gym (CP 250 or so) and he was returned to me within minutes with minimal HP remaining, and that was it. I know now that it is because someone else beat us up and took the gym.
What is the benefit? Or did I drop off too weak of a guy? I think the other guys defending were double or triple my CP.
Am I doing it wrong?

I also haven't used any eggs or incubators yet.
I've had fun just randomly discovering the game myself and collecting what I find, but I'm sure most of what I've done is inefficient.

If you deposit a pokemon at a gym you get a defender bonus (top right corner of shop tab) once every 24 hours which give you store currency. I would save the currency to expand my item bag if you dont live near pokestops.

I assume it's better to wait to use power ups and candies until one is higher level? Caught a Abra and a Jynx and a Ghastly but they're all 150 to 250, I'm only level 7, do you get the higher CP level stuff by being higher level?
How much does CP matter? Is it like the games where a scrub can beat way above its level if the type is right?

Hold on to everything rarer and use the pidgeys and common pokemon to speed up your leveling. Type makes a big difference but CP is important as well. I regularly catch high CP regular pokemon now that I'm level 16.

CP is directly impacted by your trainer level.
Don't spend any dust upgrading until you are much higher level.
You'll find pretty quickly as you level up that the dust you spent is wasted as you find higher level guys almost immediately.
Save the dust for the ones that you want to max out and have in your top 6. Otherwise, don't bother boosting them.
Make sure to save pidgeys, caterpies, weedles, etc. and evolve about 20+ of them while you have a lucky egg active. Will boost your xp gain substantially.
