Can't see us singing another. Do Frolik, Chiasson and Brouwer each get a chance on the first line RW to see how they fare?

Which is the wrong side of 30 when you're 30? The 3 or the 0?

It would be hilarious if Chiasson figures it out and becomes a first line RW after how much Senators fans wanted him gone.

It's amazing how often the age thing is mentioned in this thread. I know the league is trending towards younger players, but Brouwer is only turning 31 in a couple months. Since when is being 30/31 automatically a problem in the NHL? Give me a break. You know who is 30 or 31? Guys like Ovechkin, Bergeron, Burns, Gertzlaf, Perry, Pavelski, Krejci and so on, and they seem to do fine.

Brouwer is going to be 34 when the contract is up. Not exactly ancient.

I actually think he could develop into a Brouwer type player if everything goes well, best-case scenario of course.

Chiasson showed a lot of early promise in Dallas. He looked like he had a high ceiling. He'll be given every opportunity to reach that potential here.

Dislike these kinds of signings where you overpay for intangibles like size and leadership.

The stats don't lie, he's a mediocre player making good player money. Ridiculous to give a player at this stage in his career a four year deal.

I agree, and he'll likely not be as effective in year 3/4.

However the Flames needed to do something. You couldn't go into the year with Frolik and Chiasson as your only RW.

Ideally it would have been a 3 X 4 contract, but UFA premiums. At least both he and Frolik end at the same time, which will be important as by then the Flames should have some internal options pushing for spots.

I'm glad he's a part of the Flames now but I think the contract is an overpayment. Oh well, not a big problem.

I like this move. He'll fit in perfectly and fills a role they were lacking. Money and term are reasonable, considering it was signed on July 1. Very similar to the Frolik deal, which is right where I figured it would be.

Also, if he does not have a NMC, he potentially could be playing in Vegas in a year. There is always the option to leave him unprotected and hope Vegas likes him.

He's not going to be very effective in year one. If he can't produce on a line with Ovechkin and Backstrom then he won't be the magical missing RW for the Flames either. And at 4.5 million to boot we just flushed a load of cap space to become "heavy" whatever the hell that means.

Outdated tunnel vision crap.

I'm hoping that he's not on the line with Gaudreau or Monahan, but rather with Tkachuk and Bennett. That way he can teach those two how to play that style of game at the NHL level properly as they are both that type of guy.

Well Flames Nation just put Brouwer on blast.
That article was pretty rough and biased from the start.

The author talks about how his corsi isn't that great with only one season above 50. Problem is that he fails to even mention that Brouwer is starting in the offensive zone between 25-35% of the time.

I'm no stats whiz but having a near positive corsi with zone starts like that makes me like the Brouwer signing more.

The wrong side being 31 when the season starts. Not like we can expect him to increase production. We just gave up on a younger players who scored 40 points in Colborne.

We've been trying to rid ourselves of low value contracts like Wideman and Raymond and Stajan,, only to give a similar player a similar c9ntract.

$4.5M isn't first line money whatsoever.

Lehtera = $4.7M
MacArthur = $4.65M
Burrows = $4.5M
Laich = $4.5M
Sutter $4.375M
Stafford $4.35M

Gross over-statement.

You're talking about it like it's a 6x6 deal.

$4–5 m on the UFA market is nothing even remotely close to "first line money" in today's NHL. This is "middle-six" money.
