So, yeah, you clearly don't actually understand how quality of competition works. None of that made any sense.
As usual, I made a token effort to explain how all information is useful in analyzing a player's contributions when put in context. As usual, the parade of people who don't actually understand how the stats work come by to talk about how they see no value in them. Carry on.

Yeah, as usual you made a token effort.

Fixing for you:
As usual, the parade of people who actually understand that the stats as presented DON'T work come by to talk about how they have no value, except in a context that is conveniently never provided.
HERO charts are useless. If you have access to the information about qualcomp and player roles that will allow you to usefully interpret the data, you also have access to the data and the chart is superfluous.

Montreal has a mediocre (at best) defense corp and team overall. So they are going to face shots up and down the lineup. Looking at quality of competition won't help because all of their lines are giving up shots.
Nashville has probably the deepest D group in the NHL. And the whole team is focused on shot suppression. Weber gets the toughest minutes, and his group is going to face shots. The other lines, and other D, tend to out-match their opponents more often.
So Weber, getting tough minutes, will have lousy suppression numbers relative to his team.
Subban, also getting tough minutes, would have better relative numbers, simply because the rest of his team has poorer numbers than Weber's team-mates do, even though Subban wasn't doing better than Weber at his own job.
The stats will never capture that. And no hero chart is ever going to paint an accurate picture, no matter how much context one tries to add.
|
Why wouldn't stats capture that? If you don't like Subban's relative numbers being bumped up due to playing on a poor possession team then just look at their raw numbers where Subban is still better.
All that said, HERO charts are dumb. And I'm not sure why shot suppression and generation are treated separately when the point is to possess the puck more than your opponents. Weber has done that by being top 20 in the NHL in CF/60 over the last 2 seasons and a positive possession player despite having some of toughest minutes of any defenseman. Though I'd still absolutely take Subban before him, if only because of the 4 year age difference.

Are you an academic? You seem to keep making arguements for the sake of making arguements without actually taking into consideration what it is others in a discussion are discussing. It seems like youve run out of essays to write or mark.

Thank you.
Of course stats can capture that.
Of course any data is useful, in context.
Of course more information is better than less.
Of course HERO charts are a snapshot for dumb lazy people like me, and are mostly useless.
Of course I'd rather have PK
