Apple is nixing production of their headset due to poor sales. Haven't out right killed it but they have cut production. Didn't even get released outside the US. Not a good sign moving forwards.
I got to try one out last week, and while it's nowhere near worth $5000 CDN to me, it did do some well enough that at $2000 I'd give it a look. It felt overly "iPhone pre App Store" to me. Very much like a dev kit.
I found it highly intuitive thanks to the eye tracking and hand gestures. Most surprising for me was the video quality. Most reviews I saw gushed about the pass-through quality, and while good, I can't say I'd want to spend more than a few hours in that.
Watching a movie though? It was probably the first time I could see myself watching an entire film in it. Being able to nope out of your surroundings and have a giant screen in front of you on a forest backdrop (or whatever) was super cool. The quality was better than my TV, which I didn't really expect. Usually I find the blurry edges way too distracting in a headset to watch a movie, but this was fantastic.
It might just need a generation or two to bring that price down. My buddy who was showing me his works in 3D design, and they are having actual meetings with Apple on how to improve it, so it certainly feels like a pre-consumer type device. Get it to $1500 and pair it with a proper App Store, and maybe they've got something.

What a surprise, a VR headset comparable to the Quest 3 but without any games and 5x the price isn't selling well. No idea what Apple was thinking on this one, it was pretty obvious to any unbiased tech follower that this thing was going to be dead on arrival
I can't really comment on the technology itself. Never used a headset and really have no desire to ever do so. Was more thinking about the hype around this and how it pretty much failed miserably. Not sure why Apple felt compelled to release an subpar, very far from finished product at such a price. It was not like they were first to the market. Last I heard Microsoft was investing heavily into its software for the headsets. Wonder where that stands?
Apple in general is weird right now. There release cycle is a mess and there is no road map. I cannot get an answer out of a business sales rep if they are going to release M3 based Studios and Pros in the next few months. This seems like this is something they should be aware of. The M4 chip is coming out in an Ipad just as you release the M3 chip in laptops? At some point people will catch on and stop upgrading yearly.

It makes no sense, if this was a pre-consumer tech proofing device, then why send it off to so many social influencers to hype it up. It's an apple product, they know it'll be hyped regardless when it's released to the masses, so why do it this way.
I'm looking to take the plunge and currently have three options:
1) Buy a second hand Meta Quest 2 for $150.
2) Order a Meta Quest 3s for $400.
3) Order a Meta Quest 3 for $650.
Right now I'm thinking about option 1 to see if I like it. If so, then maybe get the 3 or 3s for Christmas. The 3 and 3s are currently bundled with the latest arkam game, which looks pretty sweet, but I hate to drop $650 and not use it.

The big reason to get the 3 instead of the 2 or 3s is the lenses, pancake vs fresnel is a huge difference. Power wise there isn't that big of a difference between the 2 and 3 (and none between the 3 and 3s), but everything will look noticeably better on the 3 because of the higher res displays and lenses. The idea of grabbing a cheap 2 to see if you like it is a decent one though, but if you do like it then just avoid the 3s. The 3 is worth the extra cash
So I did end up buying the quest 2 second hand for $150 and I love it. Although I did have one incident where I loaded up meta world social game and was running around playing laser lag in the office, well it gave me terrible motion sickness and laid me out for the evening. Lesson learned, I'm only doing teleport mode from now on.
Overall the system reminds me a lot of the Wii when it first came out as far as the cool things you can do with motion tracking. It is great for the casual gamer that just wants to jump in and have a little fun. The downside is that it is not social, like the Wii as everyone would need their own headset.
I ordered a head strap last night and the 3 just made my Christmas list.

Reason: typo
It's so much more comfortable than the default strap, and the battery actually distributes the weight better, as well as double your playtime. I would avoid the official Meta headstraps as they've had a lot of quality issues with those, and they're more expensive
The upgraded headset is a must after you start playing it a bunch. Does anyone have any games they really recommend? given time constraints i usually get the free meta plus games monthly and give them a try. Some good... Some not so good.
Couple games my house plays
- Beat Saber - Pretty much anyone that has played it really likes it so far. Can feel like a workout when you get to expert+ but is still fun.
- Zombieland Headshot Fever - Plays off the movie at first but is really pretty fun. No running around and a zombie shooter
- After the fall - More running around but it is better online with other people
- Moss (1 and 2) - Neat concept for a puzzle game that are well done. Alice in Wonderland is a similar concept
There are lots of puzzle room games that are really neat as well still to get through. My kids really liked watching Floor Plan 2 because it was goofy and they could try to solve puzzles too.
We also have a haunted house game that you just walk through a haunted mansion to strap people in for their first VR experiences that's really good.

Reason: Added in note for horror game
I'm legitimately looking at a Quest just to play Superhot. There's something about that game that just works for me. It's like doing Yoga with John Wick. That the devs won't port it to PSVR2 is sort of a disaster for me as that's where I play.

Hoping to tap into the CP hive mind to help me choose a VR headset and get the opinion of CPers for using VR for "arm chair travel".
I recently took my mom to Horizons of Kufu and she loved it. Mom's a bit bummed because her age and her mobility (and her great aversion to being around real people) pretty preclude her from travelling to places like Rome, Paris, Africa, Egypt, Venice etc. She doesn't really so much want to "go" as she wants to see these places in a more immersive environment than television can ever do.
I was thinking of picking up a couple of Meta Quest 2s used after Christmas. Get her set up and see if she likes it before investing in a better rig for her (and me).
Those who have the MQ 2 - would it fit the bill?
Anyone else who does/likes VR tourism, are there any particular apps or channels you'd recommend?
I last looked at VR for my mom back in 2016 - and it wasn't really up to snuff back then. Has it gotten appreciably better since?
What else can I do with a VR headset that isn't a 1st person shooter or has zombies? I hate zombies AND 1st person shooters. Rimworld and Sims are much more my bag and they don't need VR.

Beat Saber, Synthriders, Walkabout Minigolf, and the Creed boxing game are my personal favorites

These are the ones I could see myself buying:
