The Flames aren't going to just avoid paying Bennett - he would simply demand more later.
I agree 100%. And the situation is actually a lot bigger than just Bennett. By the Flames saying, "You've been great kid, you deserve to keep playing" is the right thing to do and sends a message to every kid in Stockton and every UFA in the NHL that this is a first-class organization. And that is worth millions.

Someone will need to point out to me in 2017 exactly where the Flames would have spent the extra ~$3M that would assure us a Stanley Cup. Better to take the high-road. And as someone else commented...the next contract for Bennett may actually be smaller with only a 2-year + ~13 games body of work to build the contract on.

The 10 game threshold is only for 18 and 19 year olds.

For any other player on an ELC you don't have to play any games to burn a year, as long as a contract starts in a season, the year is already used up.

one word for the series so far: depressing.

but I still think it's all but a guarantee the Flames squeak a win out at home (if not 2). it was night and day between games in vancouver vs at home too. we are undefeated in the dome so far and the offence has been stellar at the dome in every game too. the Ducks will not dominate us on our own ice. not with the motivation from fans and the last change advantage. the team will reap all the benefits of being at home.

I'm fine with the Flames saving the curse breaker for game 5 or 7. my excitement level for games one and two was actually quite low, because I didn't expect the Flames to come in cold against a rested Anaheim team and steal any victories tbqh (just had a hunch). the next two are way more important and will be the Flames' rallying point if they are to have a chance at overcoming the Ducks.

expected more than one goal over the first two, but its hard for me to disappointed in what has happened so far given the circumstances. they are in unknown waters at this point and are giving it what they can from the experience they have. I do expect much better this week, and will be watching far more eagerly.

I have also been told I have an uncanny ability to predict things. so trust in my analysis. we will strike back!

I hope Flames fans chant "Katy Perry." Not so much because it is clever (it isn't). Just to stick it to the politically-correct sports blog writers, that made a huge deal about it in Winnipeg, saying it was misogynistic, even though virtually nobody took it that way.

Flames are down 0-2. Some of their guys are injured. They have looked overmatched but improving in the last game. They need to win the next game or be all but out.

And your big take is "I hope the fans chant 'Katy Perry' to stick it to the librul media"?

For all those who still think the Flames have a realistic shot at coming back to win the series, most bookies have the Flames as 8:1 longshots to pull it off, so have at er.

8:1 is a realistic shot. You might want to brush up on your math before declaring yourself a god.

Not a big deal. If anything, it will probably mean that Bennett's 2nd contract will be for less money. Only downside is that it's a year earlier.

Those Ducks sure did a number on our players. Ramo will have to come up big. He played very well last game. I wish the Jets had taken the Ducks to 7, then to ahve the Flames finish them off.

You missed the point. My post was sarcastic. If you really think the Flames will win the series then why not octuple your money!?!?!?!!

I would have loved to see a Flames-Jets series.

Think about it, Sam was going to make the team this year anyways so he would've have burnt it if it wasn't for his surgery.

Slightly disappointing, but probably cheaper in the long run IMO. 2 full NHL seasons vs 3 full NHL seasons before he would need a new contract. With only 2 years he'll have less experience, less likely to 'explode' so to speak, etc.

However Sam is my favourite Flame after only 9 games, and if he reaches his potential I'd have no problem giving him a high cap, long term deal.

Everyone is obviously entitled to their own opinion, but I'm pretty tired of the Debbie Downers and Negative Nancys here.

Even if you don't have any hope, why post negative stuff about our chances or your own lack of belief? It just brings me down.

Remember the Positive Intentions playoff Thread? Let's keep it upbeat, despite the fact it doesn't matter in the grand scheme.

From Scott Cruickshank's twitter:
Backlund on slashing Kesler: "He’s done it all season long, especially to (Monahan), so, at some point, we’ve got to give it back to him."

Game 2 definitely woke this team up. I'm excited for tonight's game. I don't know if there's enough to win the series but I don't think the flames get blown out again.

Huge game.

Win it and there's something to believe in again, especially for a young team. Lose it and it's just matter of time.

Win tonight and lose in game four and give it your all to extend it in Anaheim ... great season.

Or win tonight, make Friday a huge game, win that and all of a sudden they have to return serve again.

Something tells me this team is ready to make this interesting. I picked Anaheim in 5 but I'm not done having fun yet!

Absolutely love this. Only thing I wish he chirped him after when he was flapping his arm around like a chicken. Backlund's a beauty

Flames win tonight. Colborne gets it started with the first goal. Johnny with 2 points. We didn't come all this way to lose. Keep it going boys.
