If I luck or clever myself into getting an item worth $100 for only $30, then trade that item for another item worth $70, I do come out ahead, but the second trade is still stupid.

This. His disinterested play at the end of last year was tough to watch. He hauled a lot of cash out of Calgary and jumped ship when it suited him. Calgary resurected has career after the Tampa debacle.

And I'll argue the only real loss in the deal was SOB for Sarich. That's the bad part. The Flames needed Jones' size. He certainly has not been terrible but not playing up to his salary. Small price to pay to remove a player that had zero interest in being in Calgary.
|
I think the trade has turned out pretty much as expected. Tanguay was the best player but was addition by subtraction. The biggest surprises are that SOB has been so tame and Sarich has been useful when most would have said he was washed up

Sarich was a good player, I think I'd rather have him back than SOB. In the right applications Sarich was useful.

My problem with it has been that David jones has been so useless so far. But I should stop hijacking the thread. Back to #FREEBACKLUND !

You cant lose a trade when you get rid of someone that got paid a lot and didnt want to be here.
I like Tanguay and hes a good player but he has the mental fortitude and professionalism of a toddler.
When he cries and bangs his fists you have to give him what he wants. Like edslunch said, we won that via addition by subtraction.

We weren't getting anything else for Tanguay so the deal was fine. Don't really like the Sarich/SOB part of it, but Hartley hated Sarich anyways so whatever
Edit: It's definitely a win for the Avalanche though. They saved millions and their team got better. Doesn't mean the Flames got fleeced though

Exactly. He just didnt fit. He probably wants to win, and thats just not happening here any time soon.
Thats going to be hard to get used to with future trades, they're going to be made with organizational needs prioritized.

I'm actually glad Sarich went to Colorado. I was very worried he was going to be moved to Edmonton where he would actually be exactly the kind of guy that the Oilers need.

Apparently the Canes submitted an offer for Backlund that was rejected? I didn't see anything in the last few pages (sorry if I missed it), does anyone know anything about it?

Flames offense hasn't missed a beat without Tanguay. Hudler has picked up the offense and I think is a better player than Tanguay at this point in their careers, at least he's a threat to score.
Flames had too many guys like Tanguay and needed more guys like David Jones.
I swear some of the posters on here really should go cheer for the Oilers, cause they want the Flames to be stocked with one dimensional small and soft scorers and have no time for role players or defensive players.
Oh and if we kept Tanguay, who do you think suffers most? The beloved Sven. He'd probably still be in Abbotsford. Tanguay was traded to make room for Sven.

I'm not saying I wish we had tanguay, I'm saying looks like we lost the trade. Im buying into addition by subtraction though.

The Tanguay deal would have looked alot better to most people had David Jones not looked like a worse David Moss.

Re: Tanguay — his knee has just been smashed to bits. He's been out since the first week of November & looks likely to miss the first couple weeks of December. It was a baaaaaad injury.
So, those saying the Avs definitely won the Tanguay trade are basing it on what exactly? How he played for the first 13 games?

David jones has the tools to be an effective power forward and I think he will probably go on a hot streak and, for a period of 10 or so games, will be calgary's best forward. Guys like him, glencross, Bourque, and Stewart in St. Louis are really streaky. The good thing is that he does bring a physical forecheck element as well so he's still effective when he's not scoring. Tanguay is only really contributing when he is scoring.
I also agree that it was a smart move because the flames needed a right winger and they needed to make room for baertschi on the left wing.

Tanguay.. the invisible man who could rack up secondary assists like no other.

As far as I am concerned there is no way we could have possibly lost the Tanguay deal.
This is a player who did not want to be here. Need I remind you that this was the second time he had all but requested a trade from this very same organization...? Need I remind you that this is a player who admittedly gave up on his teammates in Tampa Bay?
He is a whiner...a sulker.. a "me first"..all around poor teammate (however you want to put it..) when the going gets tough. He is not a player you want leading your rebuild. He is a solid secondary scoring option on a competitive team.. under the right circumstances. He is a pure niche player. Good riddance to him.
In addition to that Jones addressed more than a few glaring needs for us.
He is five years younger..
He is the bigger body..
He is the far more physical presence..
He is a right handed shot, right winger...
I make that trade today without any hesitation. SOB for Sarich is a wash.

Flames would have been better off to have bought out Tanguay than make that trade.
