It's hard to do that though because they split NA and European skaters. You would need determine a combined order yourself.

I looked at it since the lockout ... strictly 1st round picks:

2005: Flames chose Matt Pelech at #26
Pelech was listed as #41 among NA skaters. If they had followed CSS, they would have taken Ryan Stoa (#13 among NA skaters, drafted at #34 by COL). Among European skaters, it would have been Jakub Vojta (#3 among European skaters, drafted at #94 by CAR).

2006: Flames chose Leland Irving at #26
Irving was listed as #2 among NA goalies, the highest available. As for Euro goalies, it would have been Jonas Enroth (#1 among Euro goalies, drafted at #46 by BUF) If they had followed CSS and chose a skater, they would have taken Cory Emmerton (#10 among NA skaters, drafted at #41 by DET). Among European skaters, it would have been Yuri Alexandrov (#4 among European skaters, drafted at #37 by BOS).

2007: Flames chose Mikael Backlund at #24
Backlund was the highest ranked European available. Among NA skaters, next up would have been David Perron (#10 in final rankings, drafted at #26 by St Louis).

2008: Flames chose Greg Nemisz at #25
Nemisz was listed as #22 among NA skaters. If they had followed CSS, they would have taken defenseman Colby Robak. He was #13 among NA skaters in the final rankings, but fell to #46 (FLA) in the draft. Among European skaters, the highest ranked one was Kirill Petrov (#2), who fell all the way to #73 (NYI) in the draft.

2009: Flames chose Tim Erixon at #23
Erixon was listed as #5 among European skaters and was the highest available one when the Flames made the pick. If they chose an NA skater, they would have taken defenseman Simon Despres - listed #8 among NA skaters, was drafted at #30 (PIT).

2010: no first round pick

2011: Flames chose Sven Baertschi at #13
Sven was listed as #7 among NA skaters. There would have been one higher ranked one available though: defenseman Nathan Beaulieu was listed at #5. He was drafted at #17 (MTL). Among European skaters, the highest one available would have been Joel Armia (#4 among European skaters, drafted at #16 by BUF).

2012: Flames chose Mark Jankowski at #21
Jankowski was listed as #43 among NA skaters. The highest one available was Olli Maatta (#8 among NA skaters, drafted at #22 by PIT). Among European skaters, it would have been Sebastian Collberg (#3 among European skaters, drafted at #33 by MTL).

2013: Flames chose Sean Monahan at #6, Emile Poirier at #22 and Morgan Klimchuk at #28
Monahan was listed as #5 among NA skaters. If they had followed CSS, they would have taken Darnell Nurse (#4 among NA skaters, drafted at #7 by EDM). Among European skaters, it would have been Valeri Nichushkin (#2 among European skaters, drafted at #10 by DAL). Poirier was listed as #39 among NA skaters. If they had followed CSS, they would have taken Hunter Shinkaruk (#6 among NA skaters, drafted at #24 by VAN). Among European skaters, it would have been Andre Burakovsky (#6 among European skaters, drafted at #23 by WSH). Klimchuk was listed as #25 among NA skaters. If they had followed CSS, they would have taken Valentin Zykov (#7 among NA skaters, drafted at #37 by LAK). Among European skaters, it would have been Jacob de la Rose (#7 among European skaters, drafted at #34 by MTL).

I believe we have to win a higher pick than Edmonton. Even if we're not 1st I can't see buffalo drafting ekblad over one of the forwards available. I know Edmonton management is pretty stupid but it would be idiotic for Edmonton to not pick ekblad if they had the chance too and him being 6'4 I couldn't see Burke passing on that knowing the defense needs help. I hope we get Ekblad!

If we go off of Bob McKenzie's rankings dating back to 2004, simply picking BPA, Calgary drafts go:

2004 - 24th
CGY - Chucko
MKZ - Schremp

2005 - n/a

2006 - 26th
CGY - Irving
MKZ - Irving

2007 - 24th
CGY - Backlund
MKZ - Petrecki

2008 - 25th
CGY - Nemisz
MKZ - Carlson

2009 - 23rd
CGY - Erixon
MKZ - Despres

2010 - n/a

2011 - 13th
CGY - Baertschi
MKZ - Beaulieu

2012 - 21st
CGY - Jankowski
MKZ - Maata

2013 - 6th
CGY - Monahan
MKZ - Nichuschkin

2008 and 2012 (for now) sting. 2007 and 2011 (for now) worked in our favor.

Really not much of a difference would've been made.

And it's looking like the later Flames picks were the better ones.

2005 - n/a Why? There was a draft

2006 - 26th
CGY - Irving
MKZ - Irving

2007 - 24th Win
CGY - Backlund
MKZ - Petrecki

2008 - 25th Massive loss
CGY - Nemisz
MKZ - Carlson

2009 - 23rd Loss
CGY - Erixon
MKZ - Despres

2010 - n/a

2011 - 13th Each about the same, Sven maybe a little more valuable.
CGY - Baertschi
MKZ - Beaulieu

2012 - 21st Looks like a big loss atm
CGY - Jankowski
MKZ - Maata

2013 - 6th about equal
CGY - Monahan
MKZ - Nichuschkin

2008 and 2012 (for now) sting. 2007 and 2011 (for now) worked in our favor.
So 1 win 2 ties and a few losses, not that great but Calgary's drafting is just starting to turn around, hopefully.

I think we have a pretty decent shot at Ekblad, if we want him. Seeing Burke scout him personally makes me believe we at least have interest.. I see Buffalo picking a forward with their glut of D prospects and I think we'll pick second..
I'm not shocked at all

Ekblad first overall and MacInnis at 30. Perfect for the Flames to finish last.

Yea, which ever team drafts first overall, basically gets two first round picks this year, (as long as they have their 2nd round pick, for example Edmonton does not) because of the New Jersey/Kovalchuk issue.

Button must see something in Jake Virtanen that he does not like. ISS has him at #9, CSS at #9 NA Skater, and Button has him at #47.

We need to get that 6'7 Russian that Button has at 56. Get Kanzig and Breen up here with him and we're the tallest team in the business.

Need to pick up another first in the mid range or so (Cammi).

Wouldn't matter if Buff wins the lottery, they're loaded at D and would prob go with Reinhart or Bennett. Leaving us Ekblad.

Get Ekblad with the 1st pick.
Get Nick Ritchie with the 2nd pick.
Get Rolan Mckeown with the 32nd pick.
Acquire Brett Ritchie from Dallas for Glencross.

Moving forward build O around Monahan, Sven, Ritchie brothers.

Can you imagine Ritchie-Monahan-Ritchie line? Drool.

Build D around Ekblad, Mckeown, Brodie and of course Gio.

Oh and sign Anton Khudobin this frickin off-season, can't believe how cheap he went to Canes. I don't mind Ramo but Berra blows.

Good?

I don't think that McKeown will still be available at 32, but other than that - yeah, looks good. Wouldn't be surprised one bit if Burke was a fan of the Ritchies.

I haven't seen much of the younger Ritchie, but the older one always struck me as lazy and a guy who should be much more than he is.

Here is Craig Button on what the scouts see in Bennett
http://www.tsn.ca/videohub/?search=bennett&show=273852

Director of Central Scouting talking about the players at the top of their rankings:
http://www.thepipelineshow.com/clips...Marr_Jan14.mp3

Summary of Dan MArrs interview:
  • doesn't think Ekblad or Reinhat has fallen at all. There is just no front runner.
  • Bennett is very dynamic player and skater. Plays with a competitive edge, plays to win, and can be a difference maker. Projects to be a #1 center.
  • Draisaitl plays a power forward game. Passing and vision is NHL calibre. History has shown that you don't judge a player based on the play of one tournament. Draisaitl is showing he is the best player in the WHL right now and he isn't playing with anyone who can really set him up.
  • Dal Colle is a power forward in the making. Possibly the most consistent in the top group. Excels in skill and contact situations in the game. Only going to get better as he gets stronger. Reminds them of Ryan Getzlaf in the making.
  • Reinhart, Ekblad, Draisaitl, Bennett, and Dal Colle are pretty much interchangeable at this point
  • Ritchie is surprisingly quick. Knows how to utilize size. Has a big shot coming off the wing
  • Kapanen and Nylander are considered in the top 10 mix. Might creep into a front runner. Nylander is exciting to watch.
  • When asked about a guy with skill and a nasty edge: thinks Bennett has that game. Nick Schmaltz is another guy (ranked 19th), doesn't have size, but has compete and grit. Nick Ritchie has size and fits that mold. Virtanen is pretty good at battling for pucks in the corner.
  • Haydn Fleury plays a strong solid 2 way game. Excellent skater and plays authority. Hard to play against. Has a surprisingly good defensive game when he utilizes his skating. May be one of the better dmen in the draft at leading the rush.
