Nevermind the fact that long-distance running is basically the worst exercise in the world in terms of breaking down your body and turning you into a stick that can move.

I love to bike, especially on outdoor trails, and when I get my gym setup with go back to doing HIIT on the bike, but I simply don't understand the 'spinning' mentality of sitting on a spin bike for 45 min at a time doing low intensity cardio.

The benefit is minimal.

I think people are sticking too much to their extremes in this thread. Strength training has benefits that aerobic training will never get you, and vice versa. Ideally, you should do a lot of both.

You're going to get injured strength training if you do it wrong, progress too quickly, or otherwise get too ambitious. You're going to get injured running / biking if you have muscular imbalances / tight muscles, or again, progress too quickly.

If you're getting issues with aerobic training, see a physio. If you are worried about hurting yourself strength training, there are a lot of alternatives to squats and deadlifts. And even though I share a lot of the hate on for some of the personal trainers out there, they're probably your best bet into doing things at least close to correctly.

I am starting a boot camp next week and planning on doing it pretty steady until my Wedding in June. Hopefully I will see some solid results and then can maintain at the gym after that. I am turning 30 this year and can't believe how much more difficult it is to lose weight now than when i was younger. I have gained 30-40 lbs over the last 4 years and have struggled to lose it. Hopefully this boot camp is going to help in addition to being strict with my diet. I would love to lose 20 pounds over the next 3.5 months.

Yep, I like to incorporate both weight lifting and cardio in my workout routine. I find it's smarter to lift weights first then do your cardio. This way you preserve your muscle glycogen for the heavy lifts and allows for you to go to failure, thus more gains. I find a lot of people at the gym do cardio first then weight lifting which is ineffective if you want to progress more efficiently in lifting more weights.

It's honestly how hard you perform the cardio exercises before the weight lifting. If I do some cardio before my lifting then its pretty much used to warm up and get my blood and heart going.

Weight lifting will fatigue your muscles. If you're going to be running hard after a hard strength workout on fatigued muscles, thats a recipe for injury.

Running to the point of fatigue can put you at risk of serious injury afterwards, as well. I don't think anyone is recommending you run a marothon after lifting weights. More along the lines of 20-40 minutes of biking/jogging at a good pace.

Curious what other people that have lost significant weight do with their wardrobe? My clothes from the last couple years are ridiculously big now. I was a 36 or 38 for jeans depending on the brand, but down to 32, maybe even 31 now. Expensive proposition to go out and buy all new stuff, but guess I have no choice. I found a decent amount of clothes from my 180lbs days from a few years ago, but most of it is out of style.

Particularly, I bit the bullet a couple years ago and bought 2 expensive suits from Henry Singer- they just look ridiculously large now.

Well, I had to go though 3 or 4 wardrobe changes along the way. I gave most of the old clothes to the Diabetes Foundation because I didn't want to give them to the Salvation Army (political differences) only to find that the Diabetes Society just sells them to the Sally Ann anyway.

Anywho, until I hit my goal weight:
- I bought just enough clothes to get me through the week
- bought from the second hand store
- took hand me downs from friends and family
- for the two special occasion I went to, I either borrowed a suit or rented a tux

When I hit my goal weight I:
- bought a whole new wardrobe in celebration, though I did buy a LOT of clearance stuff at Marks.
- made sure that I donated virtually everything that was too big... Given that I had just spent thousands on new clothes, knowing that if I put the weight back on, I'd have to spend even more on new larger clothes. So extra incentive to keep the weight off.

Only thing I am still wearing now that I wore before is my winter jacket. Yes, it looks absolutely ridiculously huge on me, but I paid $400 for it and d*mn it, I'm gonna get my money's worth out of it.
