Just heard that Shaw won't be rolling this out quite yet, they will be reviewing it all in the next few months to determine what they are going to do going forward.
"The topic of Internet usage and billing is a diverse subject with many potential solutions. At Shaw, we value
the voice of our customers. We will be hosting customer discussions sessions throughout February and
March in service areas across Canada to engage in open dialogue on this topic.
Until this thorough consultation with customers has taken place, Shaw will not proceed with Internet usage
billing. To date no Shaw Internet customer has received a bill for any usage based charges."
Great news. No way it will get pushed through now if they are getting customer opinions. I can't imagine anyone would support this method.
At the very least, the caps should go up substantially. A lot of the logic behind enforcement didn't sit well with me.

I better start downloading a crap load of stuff in case Shaw becomes dickish about usage.
Interesting how they're suddenly interested in their customers' opinions now that the CRTC's decision is pretty much hooped. I'm glad that they came to their senses and are at least appearing to want the input of their customers, but I sort of wished they had gone this route initially. I'm surprised that they didn't foresee a backlash in the first place.
Also - Shaw has cleaned up their web site a bit and there is a lot more information available to you in the usage section when you log in at http://secure.shaw.ca. It now gives you 6 months worth of usage, and visually separates uploads from downloads.

The new site is a lot better looking and easier to navigate. Seeing the last 6 months is nice to know, I feel better now knowing that it was only Nov and Dec that I was over 60gb in case they do decide to go through with UBB.

In other words...."congestion isn't really a problem like we claimed originally...we were just trying to make a quick buck but actually thought the Canadian consumer wouldn't catch on. Excuse us while we go try to mislead the public in some other way."

While running ads claiming to be making the internet better. Man, those ads were just adding insult to injury.
A buddy of mine recently tried the "I'm switching to Telus, what kind of deal can you offer me to stay?" The rep replied "we stopped doing that since too many people had called asking for deals". He then attempted to get a explanation about why his cap was reduced by 20% and got the runaround and eventually the rep hung up on him. He, now is using Telus getting the same bitrate as with Shaw with 20% more cap saving a couple hundered a year in fees (no contract).
My reported usage for the October billing period, according to Shaw, is 2x what my router recorded. Recent numbers are a bit better, but that one month is way out of whack.

Since November my reported usage has been cut in half and I haven't changed my habits. Could this be because of their updated measurement system?
They didn't, they changed their website to have overage charges as well.
They just looked better because their caps are higher.
They actually got away with it because when they added the overage charges, they also said "Hey we can't track this now" so it totally neutered any response.
Still in the big scheme of things, they lucked out things went so well for them, and it will probably gain them customers.
