Why not have a system where, once a team is mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, the team's points from that point on help their odds of picking high. For example, if a team is really bad, but pushes hard at the end with a big winning streak, then they have better odds than a team who intentionally loses all their games at the end.
This would still favor the bad teams as they're mathematically eliminated first.
but I think they might pick Draisaitl because he is a winger. Oilers already have RNH and Gagner as a centre. So in that case, we might get a chance to pick Sam Reinhart or Bennett.
Edit:
I guess I don't really know much about Draisaitl. Just read that he is Prince Albert centre and not a winger.
That's okay, the greasers need a non-midget centre more than a winger anyway.
The Edmonton Oilers make their annual appearance at the top of the draft, and their shopping list is once again a long one. The Oilers would dearly love to draft Ekblad, but they will consider themselves lucky to acquire a big center in German Leon Draisaitl"
So Edmonton by your logic would have crazy good odds of first overall
Many years out of playoffs + didn't win lotto last year..?
Also teams who are on the decline are punished IMO
Not if the odds are reset after a lotto win. Only missed playoff years after the lotto win would count, ignoring everything prior. You could also just make a rule that a team couldn't pick first overall for a few years after winning the lotto which is something the league should have done before Edmonton made a mockery of the whole thing

I think this could work if they also added a clause where teams lottery odds are hurt if the team shows no significant progress in the standings over the span of 3 years or something. This encourages teams to get their top picks and then start improving ASAP. They'll go after free agents and try to improve their team in more ways than just tanking.
I have to say I like the nba system. Top 3 picks are up for grabs. And last place can drop as far as 4th.
After listening to this, the top 4 are basically all about the same skill level but in different areas but Del Colle is on fire and still has lots of strength and weight to gain and might have the highest ceiling of the draft. Said all top 4 picks are winners.

Don't understand what everyone's insistent reasoning is for bashing his skating. I don't see anything wrong with it. He's tall, and therefore he doesn't look as fast as someone smaller like Ehlers or Bennett. Guys like Colborne, Monahan, and Thornton all look slow in stride. He looks plenty fast.
I don't see anything wrong with his game. Would love a center of his caliber that can put up 105 points in the dub in only his second year.

Florida - Ekblad
Buffalo - Reinhart
Edmonton - Draisaitl
Calgary - Bennett
New York - Dal Colle
Bennett dropping to 4 might be a bit of wishful thinking but I also think it's very possible. I really do not want Ritchie at 4th, and I'm not sold on Draisaitl either, which is another reason I want Edmonton to take him. Whoever we end up with will be a pretty good player though.
I don't get why Edmonton would pass any of Ekblad, Reinhart or Bennett. Just cuz they are dumb?
I know part of it is wishful thinking, but honestly, those are the top 3 players by about a mile.
Whoever the oilers pick, their development will be screwed up.
Btw, Canucks fans (and radio)think Ekblad might drop to #6! Lol
It's time to honestly debate Draisatl, Dal Colle or Ritchie.
Every one of the top 4 forwards looks awesome. I can't wait to see the development camp next year with one of those guys likely there + all the rest of the cast.

This AHL playoffs is pretty huge for Baertchi. I think it actually will determine whether he is with the Flames in a months time. Burke wanted Baertchi to do something in the AHL. Let's see if he's done it!
If not, I'm pretty sure he's part of a trade pretty soon.

Not because they're dumb, but because there's speculation that the Oilers are really high on Draisaitl. I think Edmonton's pick will be the most interesting pick of the first round.
And Canuck fans are delusional.
