Nobody in the NHL really gets close to the 20% max in recent history, and 18% tends to be about the highest we've seen.

His current contract was 15.72% of the cap when it was signed.

20%: $18.4M
18%: $16.6M
16%: $14.7M

So if you assume 18% is close to the top end of what you'd expect, and About $1M discount on the deal, then $15.5M is right in the range.

I think the bigger question would be if McDavid agrees to 8 years, or would want a shorter duration and try to cash in even more in a couple seasons.

Who cares? If they sign Connor and Drysaddle, they are going to be paying ~$30M AAV to two players or 30% of the cap for a decade and that's before factoring in Bouchard shortly as well. Good luck with that.

I read that too quickly and at first I thought I saw 4 Oilers on 1 line together, and I wasn’t that surprised TBH
