The menu probably looks more appetizing than it actually is, just look at the kids’ lunch program meals in the US. It’s probably chili made by adding chili powder to a vat of Prego and buns are damp saltine crackers.

The food at Alcatraz was actually pretty good, according to the books. The theory was that prisoners that were fed well would cause less problems.

They were also given hot showers as it was intended to prevent prisoners from becoming acclimated to the cold water and thus reducing their chances of survival in the event of an escape attempt. The water was often scalding hot, which made showering uncomfortable and even dangerous for some inmates.
