If you gotta keep him, offer him league min and 2 way. He isn't worth more.
But he has had lots of time and opportunity to prove what he is, and he is basically a 10 lb heavier version of what was picked up a few years back.

Although clearly not a strong player for us this year, a farm player would take his place right now if it was beneficial. Nobody is stealing his spot quite yet. Hopefully it happens at some point though.

Joe Thorton disagrees.

You keep saying that. Are you just ignoring Grant, Hamilton, Agostino, Shore, Arnold?

No. I don't think they have demonstrated they are ready for full time duty.

How would they do that without ever playing in the NHL?

By playing consistent, quality hockey at the AHL level and performing well at training camps.

I thought Grant showed some good things when he was up and has continued playing well on the farm.

Reading the AHL forum, those guys get consistently good reviews from AHL watchers.
It's not like all guys at NHL level on the Flames are performing consistently.

It's pretty safe to say that our forward prospects look pretty lukewarm with all the graduations over the past two years. One of those good problems I guess, but it's ironic how the Flames prospect strength went from F to D so quickly.

Maloney thought about delaying the Scott trade until after the all star game, but really wanted Tinordi and there was a chance the deal was going to fall apart, so pulled the trigger
Some think hagelin trade might be setting up for a Drouin trade. Some surprised that the Pens would take on so much term.
keep an eye on the Ducks loaded D group once they get healthy lots of interest there
teams are asking about Russell, but one GM says he has been told Flames trying to re-sign him
Staal's agent will meet with Carolina net week to discuss future
Kings will take a run at re-signing Lucic

I have no idea how far along (if at all) this is but ...

One thing I have consistently heard in the last couple of weeks is Jared Cowen and Calgary

I used to like Cowan but that makes no sense right now given the Flames depth on D.
Unless you're shipping out Wideman or Smid for him. Just makes no sense.

The few things that give me hope for Cowan is he is actually good in his own zone, is only 24 and still has a couple of years to figure the rest out.

My own prediction is Russell going to Ottawa. May not be straight up but I see him ending up in Ottawa.

yikes isn't cowen more or less Phaneuf lite 2.0 ? All the tools but no sense of what to do with them ? If so stay away. If not maybe a change of scenery helps ? Russell for Cowen straight up I not sure I like that one.

Cowen would be okay as a #6. Wouldn't be opposed if the Flames moved Russell for him because of size alone. Not really a great or bad idea. It depends on what the deal is.

No. Nurse is Phaneuf lite 2.0. Cowen is even worse. Like way worse.
Cowen is MAYBE a borderline NHL calibre defenseman. Can't skate or handle the puck at all.
