Draisaitl could sign for $15 million and team friendly reporters could still call it a "discount".

I highly doubt 15m would be a discount for Draisaitl. McDavid? Different story.

I don’t know about that, you have to consider what he’d be offered as a free agent next summer with a 92M cap and an 18.4M max contract before you decide what a discount would be

No it won’t
If top players sign for more, there will be less for everyone else.
The players are splitting 50% of HRR. The share is limited

Oops. Yep. Meant trickle down for the next crop of star players.

The more cap trouble teams get into the more pressure there will be from the rich teams to amend the rules so they can spend more.
I would also love to see if the annual amount of money placed on LTIR has increased over time l. Teams definitely use LTIR to skirt the cap. The more teams up against the cap the more that will cheat, and the more money payers will be paid.

Doesn't work that way. The players still get their 50%, and that includes money paid to players on LTIR. Anything extra that they appear to get is clawed back via escrow.

Yeah in today's cap environment, $15 million would look like an overpay for sure.
It's just my personal opinion that guys like Mackinnon, Matthews, Kucherov, McDrai, Makar, etc are all worth 20% of the cap. The max.
They leave a lot of money on the table though so GMs can go out and sign huge and over long contracts for doorknobs like Neal and Lucic that everyone knows will be god awful by year 4 or 5.
The superstars are essentially the only players that aren't taking every last dollar they can get.

For me a Discount for Draisaitl would mean $12 or under, and a Discount for McDavid would be $14 or under.
Personally I expect them to come in at $13M and $15M respectively, which could be framed as a discount still I guess

Realistically the two of their contracts should crowd 30M.
Makes things interesting when you consider they’ll have to pay Bouchard at least 10 ha ha

15M for McDavid would be a massive discount.

Kind of...cap will likely be $92M when he signs, that would make it about 16.3% of the cap.
Nobody in the NHL really gets close to the 20% max in recent history, and 18% tends to be about the highest we've seen.
His current contract was 15.72% of the cap when it was signed.
20%: $18.4M
18%: $16.6M
16%: $14.7M
So if you assume 18% is close to the top end of what you'd expect, and About $1M discount on the deal, then $15.5M is right in the range.
I think the bigger question would be if McDavid agrees to 8 years, or would want a shorter duration and try to cash in even more in a couple seasons.

Draisaitl will get 15x7 on open market. That's $105M
So any 'discount' would look like maybe $112M over 8
Call it $111M and he's under $14M and about 15% of likely cap.
That's what a 'team discount' might look like.

Well, the bottom 5% of the sentient potato class. Most sentient meters have trouble getting a reading. A very, very sensitive university quality sentientometer can get a 1-3% reading. So technically, you are kind of correct. But barely.

Whilst I know that you are being very positive and polite and generous about staples, we now have the double riot and social upheaval and unrest caused as both sentients and potatoes unite to protest this grave and unjust comparison.
